I use my 430EX with a ST-E2 Wireless transmitter.
So to answer your question....yes.......buy one of these:

or buy one of these:

You have a PC to hotshoe cord for that, right? Or did you find another way?

| Yeah a little hotshoe that I can mount on a stand. Cable hangs out of that and plugs into the pocketwizard. I have a pc to 1/8" adapter, but you can get the hotshoes with the proper 1/8" cable end native, they just didn't have one where I went and, of course, I didn't want to wait. |

| SO what would be my cheapest method to start using this thing off camera? Apparently there are multiple ways to do it, which is the cheapest and does anyone have a link to purchase online? |

| Pocketwizards pair is about 360 bucks. Not sure what the wireless transmitter from canon costs. You can also trigger it remotely by using a 580EX. Not sure what that costs either but I imagine more than either of the other two. All have pros and cons. Big pro about pocket wizards is no line of sight requirement and they work up to about a quarter mile apart. |

This is your cheapest method:
//www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/12972-REG/Canon_2391A001_Off_Camera_Shoe_Cord.html
but it won't get you far off camera
I suggest looking for a ST-E2 used. I got mine for $150

Thanks, I think I'm going to get an ST-E2.
So with the ST-E2, I put it on my camera and set my 430EX to slave mode right? And when I hit the shutter it fires the flash? Is it basically that simple?
What if I have two flashes? Will it fire both of them at the same time? |

Yes simple as that. It should fire both.

This is the cheapest but make sure you understand (and make sure you get the v2's that work with the 430EX). This will be all manual (like the PW's) and unlike the PW these guys miss shots sometimes and might have a lower then max sync speed. Mine are mostly good but I cannot shoot at max sync and I still get hal-frames at times. The STE2 will allow ETTL, although personally I would get a 580 over the STE2 since you will need more then 1 flash anyway for a lot of applications.

Can you use the 580EX II off camera without a sync cord or transmitter in any way? I don't understand how the 580EX will trip the 430EX...unless of course it is sitting on the camera - but the whole point is to not have the flash come from on camera right?

Without a cord or the ST-E2 the 580 will have to be on the camera. You can still bounce the 580 and use the 430 for a back light, high key light or fill. |

You can also cover up the 580EX while it is on camera. I think it is best to buy a ST-E2 and then eventuially buy another 430EX flash becasue you can set mor power to one and both will be off camera.

I think I'm going to start with the fake pocket wizards that some of the Strobist people use (cactus v2), eventually moving to the new pocket wizard transceivers.
Anyone use the cactus v2's before?
The pocket wizards are too expensive.

If you don't need TTL metering ect, check eBay, "Cameras" for "Remote flash trigger" they start at about $5 and up.

Yeah but it is only line of site and short range--not to mention that it is two hundred short of a set of pocket wizards. |

I've just started getting into off-camera flash, with a 550EX, and the Cactus v2 triggers. It's a lot of fun. ETTL off-camera would be really nice, but I'm finding that anything off camera is a setup shot anyway, so spending a bit of extra time getting the manual exposure right is no great hassle. And hopefully I'll get quicker at it, and better at not overexposing the flash.
If it's on the camera, I'll use ETTL every time, often with flash EV adjustment, because I find ETTL to be an intermittent underexposer. ETTL off-camera would be nice as an option, but not worth the cost of an ST-E2. I'd rather go for another 2nd hand 550/580/430.
Eventually, it would be nice to get 2 more cheap off-camera receivers and flashs. For my setup shots, I find I end up using 3 lights, and my daylight balanced desk lamps are seriously underpowered for this. :)

How far away from your camera does your flashes need to be? I've never been in a situation where there was a problem with distance. Unless you're shooting in a basketball arena with the lights in the ceiling, but then you'd need a lot more power than Canon speedlights. As for line of site, I've used ST-E2 to fire flashes behind a closed door.
I had a flash fire behind her for back light. Granted there is a window but she completely blocked the flash and the window was foggy. |
