I responded to someone selling this lens on craigslist. I offered a low ball price of $750. I know its low, but thats the point. I didn't really want to buy it, but if he sold it for that how could I say no?
Anyways, he responded saying that it was too low especially for this lens being a very sharp one. He said that there has been a lot of quality control issues on this lens and that lots of them are coming from Canon soft. I have not heard anything of this and I am fairly in tune with whats going on in the equipment world.
Has anyone heard reports of this? |

1st I've heard of it. I own one and don't have any issues with it.

Some of the very earliest of the lenses had flare issues. Canon changed the lens coating and there have not been, as far as I have known, issues since.
Rumors like this fly around, but I think there's rarely anything to them. The 24-105L is very sharp in the general scheme of lenses, but probably on the soft side for L lenses (still read very sharp). The issue probably comes from the 4x range in the zoom. It's an excellent walkaround lens and the versatility gained has to exact a price somewhere. It likely does this by being f/4 and by being less sharp than, say, the 70-200 or primes. It has been sharp enough for my gallery work. My biggest issue with the lens is that at its widest it can have CA problems on the corners. I generally have to fix this manually in PS.

You can compare the two lenses at f/4 here. Centrally the 24-105 is no softer than the 24-70. At the edges however, it does soften up a fair amount at 24mm.

I just wanted to know if that rumor had anything behind it. My rental company is just about to launch and in the meantime, I have been able to use all the great equipment before they all go to customers... hopefully.
I have to say that the L series is absolutely amazing. Its hard to pick a favorite. I did get to go to a concert with a pretty impressive rig... 24-70 2.8L, 70-200 2.8L IS, 85 1.2L.
In about 2 weeks the site should go live and if people are interested, I plan on doing about 3 rounds of "test" orders for discounted prices. I am going to only make a few lenses available so i can test our shipping times and fine tune anything that needs to be changed. Let me know if youre interested in participating.

There was a problem with the initial batch, before a certain serial number. You can google up some details. When I sold mine, I was asked specifically what the serial number was for this reason. As I recall, that problem was quite some time ago. |

How can you tell the lens UT number if you don't have any paperwork on it? |

It is stamped on the mount of the lens. |

I have played with this lens and compared to any other lens I currently have I'd definatly classify it as soft. Even at 2.8 on my other lens they are sharper then the lens I used.

Oh yea, there it is. Thanks.
By the way, I'm finding my 24-105 much sharper than my 28-135 IS. |

Hey... I'm interested in renting the 85mm 1.2L if that's a possibility.
