Well at least Nikon has addressed the noise issues at high ISO. I wonder how much someone will give me for a kidney....

Never mind 3200. The guy with the trumpet was shot at 6400. I wonder what NR was applied either in camera or after. Either way the results are fantastic. |

If you change D3 in the link to D300, there are sample D300 images ... linky ... but nothing above ISO 200. I am really wondering about noise at high ISO levels on the D300. Does the fact that there are no high ISO images in the samples indicate poor noise performance?

I wonder what it looks like at ISO 100? or ISO 50?
Oh wait, can't do that. ;-) Better break out the ND filters when you want some longer shutter speeds!

The D3 images are very impressive. The trumpeter especially, at ISO 6400. the lower ISO samples look very comparable to the 5D from the standpoint of total detail rendered, and that is high praise indeed.
It will be interesting to see high-ISO RAW images. The JPEGs are impressive, but I'll reserve final judgment until I see RAWs. Aggressive NR on JPEGs can hide a lot. Still, looks like Nikon has (or rather will) deliver a highly competitive camera. Welcome to the wonderful world of full-frame, Nikonians! |

also it is harder to judge how decent the noise levels are. Sure it looks good in the JPG, but one, they could have used any noise reduction methods out there. and also most of these shots were used in very controlled light situations(exception of hte trumpet player) like the lady model leaning on the bar was shot with a few different lights, which will help make the noise less apparent.

Dude you really think so? Come on man the camera is the latest technology and it's 5 grand to boot! I bet the uncompressed raw are unbelievable and I know it will stomp the crap out of any canon...

"Extreme Low-noise ISO range with Advanced Noise Reduction enables photographers to confidently select from 200-6400 ISO with an expanded range that includes Lo-1 (100 ISO) Hi-1 (12,800 ISO) and Hi-2 (25,600 ISO)"
For all intents and purposes, it has ISO100.

Yeah those are some great pix at some VERY high ISO's. Pretty fantastic. But, alas, I am team Canon. Too much invested in lenses and the sort to defect.

Unless you want a longer shutter speed in medium to well lit situations. True, it is difficult to notice any difference in quality between 50, 100 and 200 ISO on the 5D. But it does open up more possibilities in tricky lighting situations. Like getting the water blur in a waterfall landscape in daylight. Even at ISO 50 I've had to use stacked ND filters. ISO 200 would have been impossible.
If it's no big deal, why not have the lower ISOs?
Just wondering.

Ah but take a look at the whole D3 package. It is a monster of a camera and to be honest dude if Nikon didn't come out with this camera when they did I was seriously thinking about going Canon.
But now all my glass is safe and soon to be mounted on Nikon's new bad boy!
:-D

Why they set it up that way I don't know, but plenty of Nikon users have taken shots just like you describe without the ability to go to ISO 50 and having to stick at ISO 100. Here are a few examples:

Follow the links and you will find a guy who made a comparison between the available D3 ISO images and his own 1D Mk III.
interesting comparison. |
