But the camera has not been tested yet so it's all just talk so far - will high ISO shots be better or not is anyones guess at this stage.
Anyway, just want to get an idea of what others would do. Thanks for your thoughts.

I have 50k shots on a 30D, got it the week it came out. Shoot mostly weddings.
Got a 40D almost a week ago - shot a wedding last weekend.
Get the 40D.
Bigger LCD - big whoops, not as big a deal as 20D-30D LCD size.
What's worth it?
Better focus, faster focus.
usable ISO3200 - will print fine. 30D has issues above 1250 or so.
more custom functions, hightlight tone priority is awesome
faster drive mode if you need it, but what is very useful is the bigger buffer - 17 images vs 9 (in RAW)
14 bit color in RAW - a HUGE improvement to image quality - more like the 5D and 1D bodies have had the past couple of years
Things I didn't expect, but after processing 1100 wedding photos from the 40D and 250 more from the 30D...
The 40D has:
Better auto WB
Better/more accurate exposure with and without flash. |

| I keep reading about the better/faster focus - don't you think people would be getting more bang for their buck in this department (and others) by spending the big $$$ on a 2.8L lens rather than a body upgrade? Just curious. |

30% faster focus than 30D - which was better by far than the 300D (i had one of those too).
The 300/350/400/20/30 have one cross sensor in the middle the rest are single lines and have to cross at about 90 degrees something of contrast to lock focus. The center one is more accurate with 2.8 or faster lenses on the camera.
On the 40D ALL the sensors are Cross type and it makes a HUGE improvement, especially in low light. The center is now a diagonal sensor as well.
Digic 3 CPU is much much faster and calcuates more things than on earlier bodies - I have a 20D, 30D and now the 40D - the 30 can erase a CF card in about 1/4 the time of the 20D, starts up faster too (from off or sleep mode). Coming from a 300 the difference is like getting off a bicycle and into a corvette. The 40D is a Ferrari - it will display a shot on the LCD about 25% sooner than a 30D - NO waiting. NO missed shots. AND the files are bigger in resolution!
The 40D is head and shoulders above the 30D, and even farther above the less ones.
And that's without talking about the weather sealing or Live View - or compared to a 300D the batter life - 1100 shots over 9 ours WITH IS lenses attached - and I still have life in the battery! You 300 can't do that. |

NO.
I shoot canon 17-55 2.8 IS USM and 70-200 2.8L IS USM and there is a big difference in speed with them on the 40D. The processor on the 40D is different, faster, and that makes a difference.
Ever use a 1D with a canon L on it? The 40D is just about that fast in focus speed now. |

I'm talking about people asking if they should upgrade from 30 to 40 and then their lens list is filled with tamron and sigma variable aperture lenses. |

My ass't is pretty new to photography - his job is mainly tote and carry, pose and hug the customers. He does shoot during the ceremony from the back of the church on a tripod, and lately has moved to to more stuff.
He uses the 20D and tamron 28-75 2.8 XR SP lens. He's used to that. We have a tamron 24-135 3.5-5.6 as well - but in dark weddings forget it - 5.6 is wayyyy too slow.
We were the photographers for the county fair (all 5 days of it) and he had a chance to go shoot a few things, but mostly demolition derby and some tractor pulls. The first night he used his normal gear. The second night he asked to use the canon 17-55. He came back RAVING about the speed of the focus. Both 2.8. Same body. Same event and conditions.
The unlimited tractor pulls I got to shoot - used the 17-55 and 70-200 2.8 IS L - the L could get the front of the tractor in focus. The 17-55 got the trailer in focus - the lag time on focus was there, and enough to matter (VERY dark and bad lighting, and these tractors MOVE. The 4x4 trucks were not a problem for either lens)
So yes, USM matters and L matters too. Better lens or better body...i'd lean toward better lens if I had to make the choice. Lenses hang around longer.

I think you gave a pretty good description of the advantages of the 40D here. Yes, they are real advantages, but not to me. For my purpose, foucs speed is hardly important, writing time is unimportant, I don''t care about battery life too much, nor do I care about resolutions. Sure, if I get all of these goodies for free, or if I allready had all the lenss I wished for and yet some extra money, I'dd be happy with these features.
Am I unique in this respect? I don't think so. Like routerguy says, many photogs have lenses that will not allow the advantages of the 40D to be noticed. Why buy a fast focussing camera when your lens can't keep up?That's way -like I said- I'dd rather buy a 2nd hand 20D plus 200/2.8L for the money. (Actually, I'll buy the lens first, still very pleased with my outdated bycicle :-P ) |
