I have an old dog and he's starting to be a problem. He got very sick 2 weeks ago and we didn't think he'd live, but he did.
Now he's having problems again and for my sanity and his comfort I want him put to sleep. The issue today is again, he's defecated in the house - IN MY 3 YEAR OLD'S BED WHILE SHE SLEPT IN IT! This is 150 pound great dane - the poop is large to say the least.
I've had dogs my entire life - vet's do this. They may not want to, it may not be what they like to do, but it's reality and their job at times to do the unpleasant.
So i called 3 vets and all told me NO. Take him to a rescue org, or the humane society (a no kill facility here). Sorry, but I've had him his whole life, he's spent only 1 night away from home in a kennel (and he didn't like it - I had a $250 vet bill from that one night).
One was honest at least - he won't do it beacause his freezer isn't large enough to hold the body. While i've buried all my other dogs, I'm not able to dig the hole for this one.
I want to do the humane thing. The inhumane is an option - death by exposure, starvation, lack of water, let him run loose and get hit by a car - I have a gun and can just shoot him and leave the body by the road - but I want to do the right thing.
The world has gotten too damned soft. I hope all these vets are vegitarians. I'm pissed and frustrated and now my wife is mad at me - she keeps wanting to wait thinking I suppose the dog will live forever or something - this is her first dog so i suppose that makes it harder on her, or maybe she's mad that i'm making this decision and giving her no option (after 4 or 5 times of discussing this decision it's time for us to act IMO)
I hope your having a better day than me.

That sucks. I would go the route of shooting him yourself. It's cruel to let him linger on. Damn vets. |

Maybe you could find a vet that deals with large animals (like livestock). At least they'd have a freezer big enough.
Just a thought. |

Our vet is very sensitive and we've gone through a lot with our special needs puppy (Type 1 Diabetic). However, she loves animals and in loving animals she understands that putting them down in sometimes a necessity. (Of course this never applies to people).
Sad your vet does not truly love animals.
You could just let Michael Vick dogsit. (bad, bad joke)

If you were left with no other choice this could be your only option. Of course it might not be that easy to kill him quickly with one shot (which is why vets use injections, it's swift and guaranteed to work first time, and not as messy of course)
Why leave his body by the side of the road though? Why not bury him in a really deep hole instead?

This is a sad story. It has to be hard enough to even consider putting your pet down, yet when you need to make that decision you're getting no support from the profession you'd expect it from.
We have a 12-yr-old German Shepherd that is getting old very fast. We've discussed this very same thing, while not yet needing to take action. My wife hopes the dog goes gently in her sleep. Me too.
To say "shoot the dog" is easy. Doing it is another thing. I remember as a young adult watching my dad, an avid hunter all his life, agonize over putting down our family pet and hunting dog. In the end he had his best friend and hunting partner do it for him.
My sincerest best wishes to see you and your family thru this event. |

Reading this is making me sick. I used to have a Newfie and we gave him to a loving family so never had this situation. I think asking farmers in the area for contacts might be a good idea. Sorry about this.

Where I live we have an agricultural college where they have an incinerator to dispose of large carcasses such as cattle, deer and the like. You might consider talking to a farm animal vet as they have to deal with this type of issue on a fairly regular basis.
I too had the great misfortune of having to dispose of a loving and trusting companion, a 16 year old Bouvier des Flandres, and after a good cry, I drove to the college, wiping the tears from my eyes, whilst in transit, and handed his body over to a young attendant who took care of the rest.
I can't believe how writing this has tugged at my heartstrings, but all you pet owners out there know exactly what I am experiencing this very moment.
Good luck to you.

When my 13 year old, 140# Black lab died 4 years ago, I called a crematorium. Many of them have services for pets. You pay by the pound. Can have some of the ashes and they gave me an angel doggy pin.

The day that a dog craps in my kids bed while he's sleeping is the day that that dog gets a one way ticket to Korea. |

So you want to treat your dog the same way you do people who want to get into wedding photography? ;-) |

We had to put down our dog a few months ago. The animal shelter sent some people out to give him a shot, and we buried the body ourselves. |

although annoying, sometimes little off topic remarks within a thread, as long as they aren't flaming, actually extend teh life of the thread and should be welcomed, not scorned.
please keep that in mind. |

Yeah. Little remarks can be annoying. :P
Nice 6 day bump. Talk about extending the thread. He-he.
Now that you've resurrected this...I wonder what happened to the dog mentioned in the OP? |
