Okay since my other post was so vague I'm reposting. I'm upgrading in the next few months and have it narrowed down to 2 cameras. But I'd like some info on what I might need for a small portable studio setup that I can take to people's houses. I need an economic opinion here, not what all the pros are using. I don't need the biggest and the best- I'm using an Oly right now and it's done me well so far. But time to move up in the world.
All of my portrait work so far is outside so I need help with what I'll need inside- how many lights, umbrellas ect. For now I need to go the cheaper route that will still do a good job.
Is this enough info? |

If you go Canon ... then for lighting, buy a Canon 580EX as a master and Canon 430EX (or two) as slave(s). Some stands to put the slaves on. Some umbrellas to diffuse the light from the slaves. And also get yourself a reflector or two which can be helpful when not using the flashes (or even when you are, they can help redirect the slave light).

I'm going to bore everyone by posting a link to Strobist again.. :) Because what can be achieved with even one off-camera flash and an umbrella is worth seeing. For example the portrait shoot he describes here;

Ya beat me ... I was going through Strobist trying to find a good example. :-) It's a great site. Love how much info he's willing to share!

another option similar to this one (for $40 more) would be to get two 430ex flashes and the ST-E2 wireless trigger. This way, both flashes can be mounted on stands with umbrellas.
The link below, while not my best work, was shot using a 430ex in an umbrella, a 420ex aimed straight at the ceiling, and the ST-E2 triggering them.

Thank you thank you.
Sorry about the vagueness of the other thread, wasn't sure how to word it. I'm not one that posts much so I don't know what catches peoples attention!
Anyhow, I'm not sure what camera I'm getting yet. Ultimately I'd like to have the Canon 5D, but I know that's out of the questions cost wise- could get the camera but nothing else. So now I'm torn between the Canon 40D and the Nikon D200. I'm waiting to see if my friend sells his D200 for the D300. If he does I'll probably end up buying the D200 off of him since I know it's well cared for. My goal is to have everything up and running by spring- someone wants me to do their wedding in May. Mainly I want to have what I need by Jan/Feb so I can work with the new eqpt before shooting the wedding.
I don't plan on doing weddings regularly though lol. This is just a one time thing.
So basically I need at least two lights and two umbrellas? Is that what I'm getting here?
Going to go check out that website too.
