I HATE the software that comes with the Canon 40D for RAW conversion.

I have CS3! When will Adobe offer support for the 40D RAW files?

Any other options for me?

Whats wrong with DPP? Hey at least it works. :D

Seriously it does a great job and actually works, most others will catch up eventually. Until then shoot jpeg or learn to get along with DPP.

I know that the 40D isn't on their updated list but have you tried ACR 4.1 yet?

I saw a link to Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer for Windows XP in a Forum topic earlier today to view RAW images. I went to download it, but decided it was not worth it when Micro$oft insisted on installing snoopware Active-X control Windows Validation software before they would give it to me. I bought my Windows but I refuse to allow Micro$oft to audit my PC to make sure.

Adobe takes 6 weeks or so for their updates.

Canon has a tutorial site for DPP - it's great software and updated more often than ACR.

And it's the only way to use the dust delete data. Picture styles are fully supported (and there are more downloadable as well).

Thanks everyone...I just really liked using CS3 to open the RAW...I guess I will get used to other stuff...

Also, when working with tif files, I don't have all the editing options in CS3...some filters are greyed out, some options with layers are greyed out as well...why would this be?

If I convert to jpeg, everything is available to me. I don't understand.

converting to psd should give you everthing as well.

It could be that the tiff it is saved as doesn't support layers.

Sounds like you are usually working in 8 bit.

I think a number of the options aren't available on a 16 bit tif. Try converting to an 8 bit tif and see if they are available.

There was also an option within DPP to open the file into Photoshop. Then you can save it as a PSD and do whatever you want with it. Is this what you were trying and you got the grayed out commands? I played around with this briefly last night and forget if converting this way had the grayed out commands or not.

It will be a little while before Adobe updates ACR to recognize the new 14-bit CR2 files. The same with Canon--it will be a little while longer for them to update their RAW CODEC to be able to natively view those files in Windows Vista.

In the meantime, use DPP and convert to 16-bit TIFF, then open it in Adobe Photoshop.

Remember these 40D files (at least mine, anyway) convert to about 60Mb TIFF files.

Ahh, it was the 16 bit tiff that was not giving me all the options...8 bit works very well.

Even a 16 bit tiff converted into a PSD did not give me all the options.

I still cannot achieve what I want using DPP vs CS3. I seem to have a harder time adjusting everything correctly.

Yikes - I'm completely techno-retarded and even this simply conversation is way over my head. I've always bumped past my adobe thing and simply openned my pictures via : My computer - H drive - select all - copy - paste in a new file folder - open with adobe.

I just got a Cannon 400 XTi last week and here I am, sitting in front of my computer looking at Zoom Browser that comes with the Cannon and I can't cut, paste and open with Adobe. In simple terms (I know these above are simple but I'm a bit behind the times) how can I cut and paste if my images are in RAW? When I do this they won't open. :( EAHHKKK Help. :(

You may need the updated plugin for Adobe PS in order to open the RAW files for the XTi.

Hmmmm.... where can I get the plug in? Also, some pictures will open are not showing as RAW though I never changed any settings while shooting. So, there is a way I suppose to somehow shoot and save to the card without doing so in RAW. HOW??? The manual doesn't talk about this problem at all.

LOL, seriously right now I am viewing in the Zoombrowser, clicking view original file, waiting for it to convert to a tiff and then saving it as a jpeg to my computer. 400 pics to go... there has to be an easier way.

WISDOM ???

Well, I downloaded the plug in, saved it. Now what - I attempted to open another RAW file from my camera and it still says its an improper file. I double click the plug in and nothing.

Pardon my ignorance.... but now that I've downloaded this thing - how does it help me open RAW files in Adobe PS?

You have to replace the old RAW plug in with the new one. The installation instructions are listed on the same download page.
