I went to my local camera shop and held the new canon 40D and what a nice camera it is. I found myself wanting to pull out my card and purchase it but could not do it. I have the money for the purchase because after years of being without I have been blessed with some income that would allow me to make such a purchase.

I have been watching and reading up on the 40D since it was rumored, telling myself I was going to get that camera. But now that it̢۪s here and as sweet as it is I can̢۪t justify the purchase.

I got my 350xt back the other day, I know its two years old, but only has 8100+ clicks on it. I stood in the store, one minute reaching for my card and the other telling my self no. So I walked out without purchasing the camera, the only one they had in stock.

My 350xt is the first DSLR camera I have owned and it is a respectable camera for my use. I think I would be better off investing in accessories such as lighting, flash, maybe a nice canon 10-22mm lens and a good prime lens for portrait before I abandon my current camera and purchase a new one.

It was hard walking away without that new toy. Oh I hope I made the right decisionâ€Â¦

I'm the same way when it comes to purchasing for myself. I was so used to making do that I couldn't justify spending so much money on a new toy when I already had a perfectly good one. All I can say is, if you really want it, go for it. You deserve it! Plan B is good, too. You can get all kinds of great accessories to compliment your existing camera.

I've often been told that the lenses are where you want to spend your money. Over time, the bodies always get improved upon (ie: higher resolution, etc), but the lenses are usually good for a lifetime.

you made the right decision, now go and buy yourself a new lens, preferably one with red ring :-)

I think you did good... Prices will go down more, and you do have a good camera and lenses. I think (in my case though) you should not think a 40D would make you a better photographer, you can be all you can with what you have right now. I am saying that because it is a good camera.

Anyway, if you wait a bit more, when you purchase 40D, your pocket will stay heavier ;)

Now, having said all that, nothing like getting out of a store with an expensive box... Like kids from toystore (double that)... that's if you have enough money to spend around of course :)

you are not the only one. I have been thinking of canon xt for the sake of f1.4 prime lense (all the other range R1 is very good). I have money to spend on it, my wife has given me green light. Today also went to store but could not finally buy it. Just can not justify to buy it, specially when R1 is such a fantastic camera.

It's good to see some people still have common sense. I'm pretty sure there are people who sold a 350D and their (only) lens, probably the horrid 18-55, to get a 40D with (another) 18-55. But hey, it's got IS!

Wait a bit, those same people will be selling their 40Ds soon to get the next one. Then you will be able to get one cheap :-)

time to spend tht money on some lenses. As stated below, camera bodies will come and go but lenses usually stick in your arsenal. Happy shooting!

Agreed. Your camera is good for a while yet. Spend the money on getting a kickass walkaround lens. I see you have the Tamron 2.8, I was going to suggets the 17-50mm version as its great but that might be overkill.

You could go for the 17-40L but I prefer my Tamron as it seems sharper and is a lot faster, but i think a good walkaround lens, a flash unit and some diffusers/softboxes would see you quite nicely.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.

I would like to get a good portrait lens (prime).
I need a good flash, don't have one.
and yes I need some diffusers/softboxes.

I have a spare room (approx 12x12) not large enough for a studio but large enough for some setup shots. i would like to get some nice lighting for that.
