I hope someone can point me in the right direction for this little problem.

I use PSP 6.02 (may upgrade to version 8)and resizing is not a problem, I believe smart resize is good for photographs? The choices are:- Smart, Bilinear, Bicubic & Pixel.

But what is the best way to get the file size down to 150Kb from what is normally well over 1MB without losing the colour definition and overall quality of the image?

Sorry, if this has been asked before but I could not readily find such information.

TIA

use the "save for web" function. I don't usually use photoshop, but I'm pretty sure you can set what you want the file size to end up near.

I have found the most effective technique is to save my final image as a TIFF file, then use the save-as-copy command to save JPEGs with progressively more compression until the final size is under 150k. This will preserve the EXIF data, whereas Photoshop's Save-For-Web feature does not.

Compression will "always" yield image degradation, especially if the image has a lot of detail. I will sometimes save the image smaller (e.g. 600 x 450) so that I can save with a better-quality setting.

I use PSP7 but PSP6 is probably the same so here is how I do it. While image is open in PSP, go to "file/save as"

Click on "options" and then "run optimizer"

Under "compressed" you will see the size.

Change the "set compression value" number until the size is just under 150kb.

I don't lose any noticable quality of the photo with this method.

Another thing I have learned is not to use PSP to judge the size. My photos were showing over a meg size in PSP too. Open the folder in windows instead and right click on the file to check properties. It is always much smaller than PSP showed it.

Good luck.. and welcome :)

in the long run
150K is quite small for a photograph that is meant to be viewed fullsize.

so, you have to expect to compromise some quality to minimize quantity.
never modify an original - always a duplicate.

just play with the different options available to find what suits you best.

The size displayed there (and in Photoshop too) is based on the uncompressed data, and is purely a function of the number of pixels and color depth.

Xpixels x Ypixels x 3bytes (24 bits) / 1000 = size in kb for ordinary full-color RGB.

The compressed size on disk can vary widely (more than a factor of ten).

... upgrade to PSP8 as soon as you can afford it. It's an enormous improvement - an improvement over what is already a very good programme.
