I recently got new "lens covers". I went to buy Skylight 1B's but was told by the guy there I was better off with UV filters. Price was they same, they had all in stock, so I don't see any reason why he would steer me in that direction unless it was the way to go.
Replaced a lens that recently broke, replacement had different ring size. Return for a new filter. Different guy.
They only have the Skylight 1B and the guy insists it is no different to the UV filter.
So my question ....
Does it really matter, for a digital (if that makes a difference) if I use Skylight or UV filters as a means of protecting the lens?

There is a difference indeed, but it is so little and so irrelevant when it comes to digital cameras, that even the minutest editing in photoshop will counter / emulate the effect. Besides, with the type of lenses the average digital SLR consumer uses, it doesn't make any difference.
That said, if you have a choice, go for the UV. If you don't have a choice, chose either: as long as your lens is protected, you're fine.
