2008 Internship Program
UPDATED May 14
The Palm Beach Post has two 12-week reporting internships (1 metro, 1 business) and one Library internship in the summer of 2008, and three 16-week internships in the fall: two for photography, one for sportswriting.
We pay $475/week during our internships, but that does not include room, board or transportation. We are always happy to work with interns trying to find a place to live in the area. We don't have official application forms. What we ask for is a cover letter explaining why the student wants an internship here, a resume, reference list and 5-7 clips for the reporting jobs.
The summer reporting internships will be in metro and business. All writing internships require at least one previous daily newspaper reporting internship. For those, send resume, references and clips to Lynn Kalber, Director of Administration/Newsroom.
The summer library internship applications should be sent to Library Director Sammy Alzofon.
The photography internships require applicants to have had at least one previous photo internship. In addition, we need to see a photo story (either in slides, prints or on CD) and clips of published works. For those, send materials to John J. Lopinot, Deputy Photo Director.
The internship program is open to college students who are interested in pursuing a career in the newspaper field. The competition, as with full-time jobs these days, is stiff.
The deadlines for internship applications are: Dec. 1, 2007 (summer internship) April 1, 2008 (fall internship).
Lynn Kalber, Director of Administration/Newsroom,
The Palm Beach Post, 2751 S. Dixie Highway, West Palm Beach, FL 33405

Photo Intern
About the internship
As a Nerve photo intern, you will help with all aspects of editorial production for the online magazine: researching new talent, calling in books, editing and formatting images, organizing the archives and photo library, brainstorming future story ideas, and organizing shoots. The position is hands-on, and is a good entry to the photo editorial world.
Who we're looking for
College students and recent graduates who can work 2 full days a week in our Manhattan office. Applicants should be psyched about nerve.com, and our subject matter: we cover sex, relationships and culture- our original, edgy coverage of photography, film, books, TV and music receives half a million unique readers per month.
You're interesting in photo editing, and are plugged into the photo scene. Ideally, you're a photographer yourself. You're well rounded-- you can appreciate Vice and Suicide Girls, but you also hit the gallery scene.
Stipend
$200 a month.
How to apply
Email "photo[at]nerve.com" with the following documents:
* A cover letter describing yourself and what you would bring to Nerveâs photo department, and how a Nerve internship relates to your future goals.

As a Nerve intern, you'll have opportunities to write for the site and participate in editorial meetings. You'll also get a unique, behind-the-scenes look at how a web magazine comes together. And your friends will think you have the best job ever. Of course, you will also do your share of grunt-work: research, office organization, buying caffeinated beverages. But we promise to take you out drinking at least once.
Who we're looking for
College students and recent graduates who can work 2-3 full days a week in our Manhattan office. We want you to be into Nerve as well as the subjects we cover: sex, culture, music, film, art, journalism, and literature. If you're creative, self-motivated, and professional, all the better.
Stipend
$200-300 a month (depending on time commitment) and unlimited espresso.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
at
THE ACTORS THEATRE WORKSHOP
Online application
The Actors Theatre Workshop: Founded over two decades ago, The Actors Theatre Workshop (âATWâ) is an established pioneer in non-profit theatre committed to producing classical and contemporary plays, developing new dramatic works, training and developing actors, writers and directors while making a difference in the lives of homeless children and the community at large. A creative development laboratory built by strong, experienced creative leadership, ATWâs mission is to teach individuals from all walks of life original creative techniques that provide them with the tools to change, and to create new, original theatre that examines the conflicts that have emerged from todayâs cultural mix and creates hope for fulfillment in the human experience.
Creative Leadership:
âThurman E. Scott is the inheritor of the Stanislavsky legacy and of my legacy. His work advances acting technique for the next generation. He is a leader in the new theatre of the future.â
- Stella Adler
ATW was founded by Artistic Director Thurman E. Scott, an award-winning actor, writer, director and teacher of drama. Mr. Scottâs extensive stage work includes a wide range of acclaimed classical and contemporary performances both on and off-Broadway, including six seasons at the Public Theatre, a special performance for the Moscow Art Theatre at Lincoln Center, and an award-winning signature performance in Open 24 Hours. Building on his success in the theatre, Mr. Scott went on to be a major creative force in developing the Dino De Laurentis Film Studios in America. He has also created programs in prisons for incarcerated individuals to train their imaginations and liberate their talents. In 1990, Mr. Scott, with a group of committed theatre artists, opened the doors of The Actors Theatre Workshop on West 28th Street in the heart of Chelsea Garden Community.
Internship Program: ATWâs Internship Program provides young people with education in non-profit theatre administration, programming and production. The program is open to college undergraduates and recent graduates with a career interest in non-profit arts management, and individuals who are considering a career change into the non-profit arena. The program begins with a one-week training program in theatre operations conducted by senior staff members and enriched by reading essays written by ATWâs Artistic Director and Founder Thurman E. Scott, and viewing video tape documentaries of past programs and productions. The training period allows interns to learn about ATWâs core mission and creative philosophy while gaining hands on knowledge of its operations. Interns are then assigned responsibility for focus areas within theatre administration, programming and production.
In addition to their hands-on work at the theatre, interns have the opportunity to develop creatively by participating in meetings, planning sessions and discussions led by Mr. Scott. ATWâs goal for the internship program is to provide motivated individuals with the requisite skills to operate and manage non-profit arts organizations, become integrated into New Yorkâs cultural community, and develop skills that will serve them in their long term careers.
We understand that as young people go through their process of development they try to put their philosophy and idealism into actions that will launch them into the future. Therefore we designed our internship program to provide young people with tangible experiences and actions that will support their idealism and vision of the future, and help them to reach beyond their immediate confines to achieve their dreams.
Our society today struggles with finding a way to connect ourselves to the spiritual fulfillment of the lost ideal. We all have ideas that touch us, but often these ideas seem to exist on an intangible level. We live our lives longing to find and experience these ideas in tangible, physicalized form. The Actors Theatre Workshop fulfills this longing in individuals. Through our work in the community, our original programs and productions, and all of our activities we create a tangible opportunity for individuals to fight against apathy and subjectivity, and to fulfill their longing to connect to universal ideas.
We believe that individuals should fully utilize their abilities as they fulfill their job responsibilities. In the process, they must feel inspired, challenged and have plenty of room to make mistakes. Our program gives interns the opportunity to be challenged and sometimes-even deal with situations that make them feel uncomfortable; this is valuable because it forces them to think creatively and begin to utilize their own uniqueness. As they gain comfort with their creative insights and intelligence the interns gain a foundation of self-assurance and aggressiveness that will allow them to pursue their chosen career or direction in life with clarity and confidence.
REQUIRED APPLICATION INFORMATION: Please submit a letter of interest, your resume and an internship application to Sean Barry (contact information below). In your letter please include any talents, skills and resources that you feel could contribute to the management and vision of ATW. Prior to the interview we require that you go to our website: //www.ActorsTheatreWorkshop.com and review ATW background, creative leadership and essays written by Mr. Scott that articulate the creative foundation on which ATW is built.
*It is important that you make secure financial and living arrangements and that we are updated as to your situation prior to your start date. Please keep us updated.
SCHEDULE: ATW is open seven days a week from 10am to 10pm and offers internships that range from four months to a year or during the following academic sessions: Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer. This is a full-time internship (40 hours per week); however a limited number of part-time internships are available.
