They are all cheaper bundled with the camera than on their own. Go to BH, look the lens up. Write the price down. Compare it to the combo below minus the price of the body. |

I was commenting on the lens quality not the price when included in the kit.
However, you can get decent results with pretty much any lens if you know the limitations of the lens. Check out lens reviews on sites like Fred Miranda. |

Thanks, everyone. I know that the lenses are a little cheaper than if bought separately, but I have a new resolution to not buy crap because then I later buy the good stuff and it ends up costing me more in the long run :) Just wondering if this fell into that category. I think I'm going to just buy the body and a separate decent lens.

I'd recommend the Canon 60mm f/2.8 macro; better all-around focal length, super-sharp, 1:1 macro, smaller and lighter and less expensive than the 100mm macro. See my flower gallery for a ton of shots with this lens.
If you get the 60mm, you don't need to have the 50mm and you have instant macro without fiddling with tubes; just focus on in. The trouble with tubes is it's a pain in the ass for switching from macro-to-normal and back as you walk around shooting.

this is a great price for this lens (normally $509 on its own). this is an excellent all-purpose lens to start with. from there, you can see what you feel you are missing out on and get lenses to fill those gaps.
if you feel you need more reach, you can get the 70-300IS, the 70-200 f/4.0L, or the 70-200 f/4.0L IS
if you feel you need more wide-angle, you can get the 10-22
if you feel you need macro capabilities, you can then get the 100 f/2.8
that's exactly the approach i took. i got my 30d and used the 17-85 for nearly a year, then got the 70-200 f/4.0 IS, and a month or so later got the 10-22. next step is the macro... after that, i may consider upgrading my walk-around lens to the 24-105 f/4.0L (especially if there's an affordable 5D-MkII) |

What's the difference between the EF 17-85 and the EF-S 17-85? I only found the latter on the Canon site. |
