I know this is a still photography site, but I would imagine many of you have experience with dedicated digital video cameras.

I am looking for something to use on my school's excursions and special events (I am a teacher by trade). I'm looking for a lightweight, easy to use camera between $300-400. I've been searching around a fair bit, but I'm not really sure what's what when it comes to video cameras...

Any suggestions?

I just bought a hard drive based camcorder - Panasonic H200 - and I love it. Check out Camcorder Info, they have a great forum with lots of experts to help.
