I attended a Corel Painter seminar yesterday and the speaker made it so easy and "real" that I decided to have another go at it. I still wish it were a more intuitive software, but nonetheless, my 8 solid hours of practice today have begun to show some improvement.
I like this one 'cause its my dad.
I've worked on a dozen images or so today - will post more when I have better examples.
Who else has been trying Painter? Lets make this a learning thread!
I downloaded the trial for Painter X a few months ago (its $400 for the full verion), but the seminar speaker is nationally known for her Painter work and uses Corel Painter Essentials 3 which is only $90. Both have a free trial download.

I tried it. I found that I suck at it. I'm as bad with Painter as I ever was with "real paints" back in school! And that's why I took up photography! :-)
My wife, on the other hand, can produce a masterpiece with Painter "free hand". Just creating something out of thin air, it's like magic to me!
I do have one image online here where, I shot the picture, but she did the painting on it. This was her very first attempt at Painter!

Hey Cindi
Who was the speaker?? |

One I just finished. :)
The speaker was Cheri MacCallum //www.artbycheri.net/
The seminar was about doing the hand work that makes the images pop & believeable. I need to practice much more.

Been working on hand-painted watercolors today. I think I'm starting to get the hang of this stuff. I swear I've never appreciated my Wacom tablet so much! :)

None yet, but I threw some aligators in the moat just in case. :)
I've been going nuts with this software. Since I painted long before I bought a decent camera it feels weirdly familiar, but still very different. The biggest problem is deciding what painting style would best suit which images. So I goof with an image for a few minutes or an hour.. whatever.. then if I hate it I just close the file & move on to another. If I like it I drop it in a folder so I can look back and laugh at it later. :)
Any tips, Ken?

Love the watercolor one Cindi.
I'm interested to see how you like this as you play with it more.
I "paint" with Photoshop, and have put off getting Painter because I had heard it was so "unintuitive". I'm anxious to see how you progress with this...hope you post additional art as you explore the program more.

Thanks, Linda, I will continue to post my results.
Ernie, I have the small one - 4X6 or 5X6 or whatever it is. Its small, but works great

This is a good thread and I am impressed by what you have done, Cindi, especially the watercolour. I am very tempted to get in there and try some stuff, especially since I have a Tablet PC that allows me to literally brush the screen.
On the other hand, my best art was always still life drawing because I really could not get the hang of colour in paint, which probably explains my colour eye (or lack of it) in my photography!
But I am looking forward to seeing more from you, Cindi, as there are some great treatments there. |

I think this is the same software that our very own susi uses. I'll have to check out her webpage again...but her stuff is awesome! She was even Grand Prize winner for the NAPP contest.
Now I have to go look!! :)
ETA: Yup...just looked...she has DVD's that she made and sells too!

I would recommend that you goof with an image for a few minutes or an hour.. whatever.. then if you hate it, just close the file & move on to another. If you like it, drop it in a folder so you can look back and laugh at it later. :)
But your process would work ok also. :)
I have not tried Painter, but have been interested in it way before I photoshop, maybe even before Windows. My creative outlet prior to the computer was cartooning. What can I say, I love visual jokes.
Now you've piqued my interest. I may have to play. I have a tablet I rarely use - I haven't found my synergy of keyboard/mouse/pen yet. I'm checking into having two extra arms surgically attached. ...then what my 9th grade girlfriend used to say about me would actually be true. :) |

Give it a go, Ken! There's a free download of Essentials 3 and one for Painter X -- having tried both I'd say neither are intuitive, the auto-paint function is gimicky and Essentials is a little easier for my small brain to grasp. Just grab some brushes & start painting or drawing.... you'll be surprised!

One of today's many Painter trials.
This one was for fun, the rest are for a wedding album I hope to be able to show soon.
