I just saw a great tip somewhere about opening a new window in Photoshop for an image that's being edited. This way you can, for example, fiddle around with channels while you see the effect it's going to have in the other window.
This new window is created from Window -> Arrange -> New Window for filename.
The problem I'm having is that when I have two windows open, I can't get it so that I have one layer visible in one window and keep it invisible in the other window. Photoshop keeps auto updating both windows.
In Preferences there's an option to auto-update open documents, but that's unchecked and doesn't seem to make a difference.
My question is probably as clear as mud ... it's hard to explain what I'm trying to do. How can I make it so I can activate and deactivate layers in one window while (whilst? :-) not activating or deactivating the view in the other window? |

Whooohoo, I'm posting an answer to my own question! I think I have it figured out, but hope someone will tell me if I've got it wrong.
The new window trick works if you look at the Channels palette in one window and the layers palette in the other window.
I was trying to make a good selection using channels and threshold... not sure, but I think I've got it figured out now. Yay. |
