I just upgraded from a Canon 300D to a Canon 30D. When shooting RAW with the 300D CS2 program worked fine. Today, when I tried opening a RAW file shot with the 30D, I got the followig error message "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document".

I also noticed that the file extensions were different. The 300D RAW files had a .CRW extension, the 30D has a .CR2 extension.

Does CS2 have an upgrade I missed?

Thanks in advance.

You need Camera Raw 3.4 for the 30D, I believe.

I had the same problem with my d40. Install the software that came with your camera (even if you won't use it). Photoshop worked fine after I did same. I think it installs some kind of file recognition along with it. Or maybe with Canon it's a completely different scenario. Try it, anyways. (unless the previous post worked for you)

Thanks. I just installed the Camera Raw 3.4 update. I can now open the .CR2 files. I'm now noticing that the Adobe bridge doesn't show the thumbnail photo. Is this normal?

I just fixed the above problem. For those who may have the same problem here is the fix.

If generic camera thumbnails appear in Adobe Bridge, follow these steps:

1. Check to make sure the plug-in was installed in the correct directory.
2. Start Adobe Bridge.
3. Choose Tools > Cache > Purge Central

This would be great! If people would use the search feature for the forums, as this HAS been coverd multiple times. ;)

okay well I have done what was said here and I'm still having problems opening a .NEF file in Camera Raw 3.0 and 3.4. I have installed the program that came with the camera and it wants to open the .NEF file with a different program "Nikon crap". I want to use "Camera Raw 3.4". I tried the purge and still nothing... WTF OH Also I tried the ehlp shit on adobe and nope...

You need to delete ( or rename) the NEF driver that Nikon supply then the original raw driver from Adobe should kick in.

Before you fire up CS2 try this:

If you go to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Plug-Ins\Adobe Photoshop Only\File Formats (or your version of it) and look at the files there you will see the Nikon NEF plugin.8BI. If you rename it anything but either leave off or change the extension ( the .8bi) and then open CS2 you should be fine.

It worked for me after I loaded the Nikon software.

Okay well after screwing off for over 6 hours on how to get this to work I have FINALLY figured it out. I just can't open the NEF files (as NEF files). The new ACR 4.1 will not work with CS2 therefore you need CS3 (GO FIGURE, just another way to steal money from the us). FYI the following cameras need ACR 4.1 to open the .NEF (RAW) files,

Canon EOS-1D Mark III
Fuji FinePix S5 Pro
Nikon D40x
Olympus E-410
Olympus SP-550 UZ
Sigma SD14
Phase One H 20
Phase One H 25
Phase One P 20
Phase One P 21
Phase One P 25
Phase One P 30
Phase One P 45,

Because CS2 will not open the NEF files you need to download the RAW to DNG converter from Adobe. Then ACR 3.4 will open the new DNG file in CS2.

Hope that helps people that get a new camera.

I don't have that plug-in. [Nikon NEF plugin.8BI] I do have [Nikon YCC TIFF.8BI]

You could try the same process with the plugin you have.

As I understand the problem the NEF file format is recognised as Nikon first and RAW second. By stopping Nikon plugins from seeing the file the Adobe standard RAW plugin has a chance of opening the file.

If you rename your plugin as opposed to deleting you can always revert if it doesn't work.
