Hi,
I've just formatted and reinstalled vista. Before connecting my cable internet I made sure I'd installed and set up ZoneAlarm. After connecting to the internet and updating vista I get his annoying little popup window. It appears to be a window of internet explorer, but the icon has been changed and it displays the current date and time as the window title and always says it's unable to connect to a server. Also has you can see the control buttons are gone from the window as well, only ctrl-alt-del is able to close it.

Anyone know what it is? Or recognise the icon?

I would download a better browser then delete all IE related things and then reboot.

its not the browser. your computer is trying to load some web content but failed.

Don't forget to tell them that getting rid of IE means that they will have about 25% of sites not display properly.

and risk weird errors while using windows (especially file explorer).
sometimes the best advise is those learned first hand.

Hmm...interesting opinions on IE. I have never used it, never had a website not perform or function properly because I don't, never felt the need to load and run it for any reason.

Perhaps it is the limited number/variety of pages I actually visit (not much of a 'surfer') but I have never encountered a page that would not or could not function properly or to my expectations due to the browser I was using.

Also though, I have never had a virus or other infecting file that so many IE users seem to be prone to.

could be a program trying to auto update by connecting to a site on the internet but it cant work through zone, try shutting zone off once and mabey the port will be open for the window to load the page.

whenever you browse files and folders in your pro-XP windows computer, IE runs.

There is an option in IE to have it display real messages instead of the dumbed down generic message shown in that screenshot.

The real message will probably tell you what site it is failing to contact.

Not if IE isn't installed. Windows has two apps, iexplore.exe and explorer.exe. iexplore.exe is the bowser and explorer.exe is the dir and desktop function. iexplore.exe is not installed on this system. Go to Run - then type explorer and then iexplore and you will instantly see the difference. Internet Explorer is NOT installed on this system.
