So, I just opened my camera bag and found out that my kit lens has gone to the happy camera store in the sky.
Now I'm trying to decide what lens to replace it with, does anyone have any ideas of a decent replacement? I'm on a pretty tight budget so nothing more than $300-350.
I'm thinking that the Sigma AF 17-70mm looks good, of course I could buy another kit lens, or wait and see how the new 18-55 IS preforms.
Thanks in advance,
Matt

not quite as wide, but a pretty high quality lens for the money.
ex dg - and 2.8 through the zoom range.

I read this statement several times out loud as I visualized several possible translations in my twisted mind and my curiosity is piqued. When you opened your bag, was the lens not breathing? Did you try CPR? Was it a pile of dust? Did it just disappear? Did it leave a note? ...no, really, I'm curious. |

I did try CPR, but it was too late... It looked like it committed suicide because it heard that I was going to replace it soon.
However, the lack of a note leads me to believe that it may have been killed by my 50mm f/1.8... |

| Hunt around for a used Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5 IS USM. It's a great lens. |

They've been known to do that, that's why I keep my 50mmm in a separate fish tank.
Thanks for the answer. I'll label the cause of death as "natural causes" and won't bring charges against your 50mm since the victim was a kit lens after all. ;-) |

Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di for Canon
This is popular choice. Quite a few DPCers own it with some pretty good results |

Edit: I didn't catch the $300-$350 limit. This one may be a bit more ~$400 but it's a lot of lens for the money.
Edit Again: I meant to edit not to quote. Case of the fumble fingers I guess

I had looked at the 28-75mm tamron however 28mm just isn't wide enough, since most of the time I used the other lens and 30mm or less.
I thought about going with the tokina 12-24mm f/4 since I used the kit lens at the wide end most of the time, but that would be stretching the budget a bit, plus I'm afraid that there would be times that I'd need the 24-50mm range. |

I don't want to stereotype or profile unjustly, but you really do have to watch those 50s. Geesh. |

Yeah, I think I'm going to get a different bag for it, I can't afford for it to get any of my other lenses.

I would go for a Sigma 18-50 f/2.8. I'm starting to realise that wide apertures are so cool.

| Question, Did sigma improve the 18-50mm when the came out with the macro version? or is it the same optics/coating only with closer focusing? |

How about this idea? I'm thinking about getting either the sigma 30mm f1.4 or the canon 28mm 1.8 instead of the sigma 18-50 or the tamron 17-50, and then pick up a used kit lens on ebay for those times when I need to go wider. Has anyone used either of the primes? if so, which would you suggest?
Thanks,
Matt |
