I was just contacted by someone representing Pacific Digital Video about contributing photos to their site (as a ground floor thing). They end up selling your pics as royalty free (which scares the crap out of me), but say that photographer retains the copyright, etc. After looking through alot of photos, I have noticed they all have their name (Pacific) as the copyright. I read through the info about it, but just can't feel comfortable with royalty free (maybe for my really crappy pictures), and lose my favorite pics, etc.
Anyone dealt with these people, or something to the likes of it? Experiences?

You can't go by what the site looks like, but only by what the contract TOS actually says. If you want to be sure, have an attorney check anything you are going to sign FIRST.

Maybe one of our lawyer members (those who'll admit it) can set up an on-site discount consulting service for to deal with these kinds of questions ....

The only thing I could find relates to the license for purchasers.

I suggest you write to them (you won't be submitting anything they can really steal) and get back their info package/contract. Feel free to forward it to me, and I can give you an educated but non-legal opinion.

The key issues will be how much is charge for the uses they are selling the work for (and how that compares with standard prices), and how much you would get. The "deal" itself seems pretty straightforward and OK so long as "the numbers" work.

The only really tricky thing to look out for is anything which places any restrictions on your own copyright. So long as you retain full, unlimited copyright to the work, you have basically nothing to lose, unless you have an image you plan to print up in a fine art limited-edition and sell for a lot per copy -- don't license/sell that to anyone at all.

Not sure if I am that interested in it anyway, but I will reread the "rules" and see if they can email me a "contract" to look over. Thanks
