I know hitting 8 is beyond the wildest dreams of many of the contributers here (although some of them have hit 8 numereous times), but do you ever think that a photo will score average a score of 9 in a challenge?
Just one of those things I sometimes wonder about.

Nope. Not unless winning shots ever manage not to have anything below 5. I think there's just too broad a range of tastes.

Heh. Just my opinion, of course. ;)
I'm willing to be surprised, say, on one of my entries!

Nobody will ever beat this all time top scoring shot:
With an 8.6 - and rightfully so! I mean if you look up "Perfect Photo" on Wikipedia, you'll see this pic. |

From the shot details
"If I remember correctly, I sharpened, resized, despeckled, and sharpened again."
WTF is "despeckled"? Some ancient form of neatimage? Wow, way back then they had some funny terminology. I agree though, well worth the 8.6 score and blue ribbon, on the 4th challenge as well, nothing has ever come close, so after that photo it was downhill all the way here on DPC. |

Despeckle is actually something you can do in PS. It's under filter/noise. |

Well the key is to enter challenges with few entries. The top 6 scoring photos had to compete against 54 other entries on average. My highest scoring photo was also against a small field. |

I wonder if you put the top 100 photos into an open challenge and put it to the vote would they still score just as good as they did previously? |

Nah, everybody would expect more of them. I know if I was voting in the "Top 100 of DPC" Something that was "just ok to be in the top 100," would probably get a 5. Plus those old pictures that scored so well then don't hold a candle to the newer ones (Compare the famous pool shot to say... the recent swan lake picture). |

only if they change the voting scale to something that looks more like this 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 7 6

IMO I don't see the current 8.6 leader being overtaken unless someone comes up with a very unique style. We've had some come close but all were years ago and unique for they're time, they were some of the first of certain types of effects or techniques. Such as the water droplet and one of the first true macro's. The introduction of the Expert Editing Rules have created an all out editing war that has seen a few entries come close to the current leader but even that has not yet emerged a new leader in score. And if it ever does, how will some take it. Should there be an asterisk by the leading photograph or should I say digital art. However there are a couple of exceptions such as skip's entry Absolute Still and user Gordon entry Fantasia. They have came close to the allusive title Top Scoring Image and their photographs are Great. So what will it take, I feel something not seen as of yet, unique, passion, love, and/or fear. It's going to have to expand our horizon of thinking and universally touch each viewer. If the top photograph is over taken I hope its done by a photograph that was taken with passion and the use of imagination and the love of photography more than relying on everything goes editing techniques.
Just my daily opinion.

I understand that the Web 2.0 version of DPC (when it is finally released) will allow voting up to 11. That is, one better than 10. With the higher quality images that this will allow, I would expect the 9.0 barrier to be broken quickly.

I wouldnt be surprised if Alexsaberi, Desouza, DrAchoo or Larus managed to break the 8.6 barrier at some point in the future, their work is of consistantly high standard..
Defintely 4 of my favourite photographers on here. |

I hope 9 is never broken. In my thinking, it wouldn't necessarily denote an exceptional shot, merely that we have all become sheep.... |

I think that 8.6 shot was taken in earlier days of DPC, when the scoring was not so tight as now. I do not believe it would score as high now.
The recent 8.x are awesome. |

One question, I hope nobody has asked, but why is there only one comment made during the challenge, on the pool table shot?
Obviosly I killed the thread......like usual.
edit for the kill

I'll re-kill it for you. I think the comment thing is because it was the medievil age of DPC. If it were in a challenge today, it would have 30 some comments made during the challenge. Many of them saying DNMC. |

Well, y'all can write me off 'cause I'm certainly not that good, but I just don't see this shot as particularly impressive.
IMNSHO, it wouldn't do anywhere close to that kind of score now.
Just for the heck of it, I showed it to my wife and told her it was the highest scoring DPC shot ever.....she asked,"Why?".
