I have a photo I want to submit, but whenever I resize it it is either 160kb or 128kb. 160 is just to high, and 128 makes it look to be awful quality!! Is there some way to make it somewhere in between (without downloading any more programs or anything)?

OK, what program are you using?

Oh sorry. Photoshop CS2.

Are you using Save for Web? There is a setting that lets you Optimize to a specified file size on the Optimize menu.

OK, great - that's an easy one.

File, Save for web, then about 1/5 of the way down on the right side, just above Optimized, is a small triangle in a circle. Click on that and drop down and select Optimize to file size. You then get another popup with a small window to enter the desired file size in Kb. Type in your desired file size (assuming it's for a challenge) of 150 and click Ok, it will generate the largest file it can based on that number, thus reducing the compression. You will also now see under the Optimized on the upper right side, the quality percentage based on initial input size vs. final output per desired file size. Then save.

Save For Web is all greyed out and won't let me click on it...

I sound so pathetic right now.

Pffft - it's a common problem.

1) Make sure you are NOT in 16 or 32-Bit mode (Image, Mode, 8-bits/channel)
2) Make sure you aren't trying to save a layer. (Layer, flatten image)

Did those two things, and still nothing!

So under Image, Mode, you have RGB selected, and it's 8-bit, and in the layers palette, it's flattened?
(May wanna check also, just in case you find that your saved colors looked washed out, you have your color space set to sRGB mode. (View, Proof setup, Custom, select the sRGB IEC61966-2.1)

Do you have Multichannel checked under Image -> Mode? That also disables the Save for Web.

I have RGB, 8-bit, flattened. Still greyed out.

Have you ever SFW in the past?
Can you send it into Image Ready?
Is this a registered version of CS2?
If you have a single layer, 8-bit, RGB, SFW will accept a gif or jpeg.
If you can send it to Image Ready, then your CS2 is corrupt and either need to reinstall it or maybe a reboot.

What I suggest doing for the meantime so you don't lose what you have, is Layer, New layer via Copy, then Save (or Save as), and select .psd
psd files will always take, even when working with gimungous files that you get errors on trying to save for web and don't have enough RAM. (CS2 saved a 487MB psd, but wouldn't save a 45MB jpeg recently after crunching all day in PS)

It is a registered version. I have not done SFW in the past. I don't know how to send into Image Ready. I did what you suggested in the end, but I'm not sure what that means...

Thanks for your help btw. I really appreciate it.

File, Edit in ImageReady.

When you sort out the CS2 problem, you can easily get back to exactly where you were by finding the psd file, Open with Photoshop CS2, then flatten the layers. That way you've lost nothing.

Yeah, it won't let me edit in Image Ready either.

I think you have a corruption in your CS2 installation.
I would reboot, open nothing but CS2 and try again. If it still fails, find a picture here on DPC, drag it into CS2 and try the SFW again. If it still fails, reinstall and or repair the installation.

Still didn't work. UGHHH.

I DO NOT want to reinstall. I'll sleep on it I think. Thanks again fo your help!

Aha!! I ended up being able to open it in Image Ready and save it right!! Thanks so much!

Image ready was a way to check CS2's SFW feature to see if it was damaged, which it sounds like it is. Shouldn't have to go to IR though, but if it's an interim work-around and you are happy with the results, don't fix it (for now anyway).
