I have been hired to shoot a pretty big party next weekend at a local dance club by an up and coming music artist. They basically just want me to walk around and take pics of people partying and such. My only problem is that I don't have an external flash. Will my on-camera flash work or should I rent an external? I won't exactly be doing portraits or anything just snapping random pics of people I'm thinking. Also I've never used an external before so should I just put it in auto mode or what? Thanks alot and sorry for the noob questions! :)

Your popup flash is going to create some very harsh shadows, especially if the room is dark. Shooting in portrait alignment is bad news with the flash hitting from the side. Best suggestion is to get them to cover the cost of the rental, get a diffuser and flash bracket so your flash can stay above the camera regardless of camera orientation. If you aren't familiar with shooting with an external flash, P-Mode and flash in TTL mode is a safe way to go - let the camera do the work for you - you paid for the technology that is built into it.

I just did an indoor shoot using a Canon 580EXII on the hotshoe, in P-Mode, TTL auto-magic-defaults, and was very pleased with the results:

(keep in mind I also had a Nikon SB800 in slave mode on the other side
of the room for the wide shots, so I could light up the scene more evenly)

Awesome that's basically what I needed to know! :) I like the way your shots turned out too. Good job!
