A public service announcement, from the OOBIE/YAPPIE nomination thread:

...all OOBIE nominations posted between August 19-August 25 will go to the vote starting August 26.

As for the YAPPIE, post your nominations in this thread as usual, but now YAPPIE nominations will be collected over a month; voting and awards will occur once a month. This first "month" will be a little long, but that's ok. :) The next round of YAPPIE nominations began on August 19 and will continue through September, and go to the vote on October 1st.

OOBIEs will remain on a weekly schedule.

We haven't been drawing many nominations lately and giving out 52 a year seems a bit excessive, so in consultation with Fearless Leader it has been decided to put the YAPPIEs on a different schedule. There's always a steady influx of OOBIE images to chose among, so no cutbacks there.

Hate to be a pest...but could someone explain the OOBIE and YAPPIE?

And..is there an easier way to pick out the images in the challenge that belong to Team Suck members? I guess I'm not officially on the team...so I don't know how it works.

Okay, I think you've marinated long enough... meyers, maybe you could tell us which team has been defaulting the most recently, i.e., who needs another player?

eph, your initiation, should you decide to accept it, is to comment on some blur photos in the blur challenge...

I don't mean to diminish anyone's award, but how does this (from the OOBIE/YAPPIE nominations thread) . . .

"An OOBIE sucker is awarded to an "Out Of the Box" entry in a DPChallenge, something that meets the challenge in a creative fashion that DPC voters might not have properly appreciated."

. . . square with awarding an OOBIE to an image that placed fourth in the challenge, with a 6.8138 score, and something like 43 comments (such as this week's OOBIE winner)?

Seems pretty well appreciated to me (keep in mind, I think it's a brilliant image, it's just not OOBIE -- by definition -- to me where it does so well in the challenge).

Best,

Rob

It's true that most OOBIEs, insofar as they are "underappreciated" should likely be represented by those entries that didn't make the top ten of a challenge, but it is possible for an "oobie in spirit" shot to surprise everyone and do well. I would rank the latest oobie, personally, as one of those - hindsight's 20/20, but it seems to me that the shot in itself was a risky entry, given what generally does or does not do well in a challenge. This shot demands a viewer to really look at it and look some more, which doesn't happen much of the time.

Well, that's my take on it, anyway. :)

I think score should be a factor in the decision, but not the only factor.

Blame Team Minus!

With the number of pages in the Team Suck Beachhouse, it is probably time to tidy up, throw sheets over the furniture, and head back to town. Boo-hoo!

Sometime this weekend, I will start a new thread and ask for this one to be locked.

I'm so far behind the curve - about which OOBIE are we speaking? (And I agree, not knowing which one, that sometimes it's nice to recognize when DPC voters actually "get it".)

Evelyn, I'm not sure what you know, so I'm going to go into a bit of detail. Just skip the parts that bore you. ;)

It's a little confusing because:
a) There used to be informal teams that competed against each other
b) Those informal teams are now a formal part of DPC
c) We're an informal team that's older than the formal team system, but we weren't part of the competition, and still aren't
d) Some TSers are on some formal teams
e) I don't know of any other informal teams
f) The rules differ between formal teams and Team Suck

The norm at DPC is that people don't know whose shot is whose during a challenge, and that applies to Team Suck, too. We're a friendly community within DPC, but we have no special access beyond what everyone else has. Sometimes, though, a TSer will ask for help on a shot, and whoever helps agrees not to vote on it. That's fine.

Now, Team Suckers often appreciate the offbeat or alternatives to what usually does well in DPC voting, so you might get comments from TSers during a challenge that go against the grain. But when commenting during a challenge, we don't know whose image it is. Sometimes people here will thank others for comments during a challenge, but they don't reveal which shot is theirs.

In contrast to the anonymous system, there's the DPC Photography League, or DPL, where groups of people sign up to be formal teams. We recently completed the first season. The DLP grew out of the World Photography League, or WPL, which was an informal series of competitions that people had organized on their own. DPC's owners liked the idea and have now coded it into how the site works.

The anonymity rules are waived within DPL teams. Each team has a private thread no one else can read, and members are encouraged to share their photos, editing, etc. before voting starts. The site is coded to prevent team members from voting on each others' pics, although we can leave comments. Many Team Suckers are on teams. For example, noraneko, melethia, and I are on Critical Mass. At least one team, the Out of Focusers, is made up of all Team Suckers.

If you poke around, you might see team members leaving comments that indicate they saw the image earlier than the end of the challenge. That means the photographer and the comment are on the same DPL team.

It's best to think of TS as a community, not a team - it's less confusing.

At the end of each challenge, meyers posts TSers' entries in a separate thread dedicated just to that purpose.

Is that clearer?

And what quiet_observation just said about a new thread is because long threads can cause problems, so we periodically have to start new ones. If you look at the first post in this thread, you can find links to older ones. TS has grown from a few folks to a large group over the past year, so we have a lot to say (don't say it, Deb!). :)

And the Out of Focusers won their division, by the way. A huge feather in the virtual cap of all of Team Suck by extension, kinda sorta!

The link is in the post where I posed the question, but just for good measure, here it is again:

I've added ephln to Team Chasing Butterflies (arbitrarily chosen by looking back at the last few Team scores and picking a team not often represented). ephln, if you'd prefer another team, just PM me. Either way, ephln's pictures will start showing up in the Challenge Results thread starting Sunday night.

Where's Art and his torches when you need them? ;)

And I will officially admit, right here, that I never even noticed that Gordon's entry got 4th place - I just assumed it was a typical oobie-scorer. That wouldn't have changed things, however - he was nominated and got a fair shake in the voting, the same as anyone else. Good on him for doing so well with a shot that typically can't compete with the usual 1-second voter glance!

Thanks for your comment on rural NikonJeb. Strangely I never even thought for a minute that someone would vote it as DNMC. I though it'd get hit for processing, but yeah, I can see what you mean now you point it out!

Hey, it's funny/weird that I ended up as the one to have to comment on the rural challenge on a number of counts.......not the least of which is that I live in a quite rural area trying desparately to prevent the onslaught of urban expansion......with mixed results.

Where I used to mow with the tractor and the brush hog is now some of the most expensive and desirable commercial ground in the area. And I just recently moved ten miles further out because of the same thing......the place I moved to in '84, surrounded by woods, farms, and real country living is all stores, highways, and developments now.

And I almost gave up trying to find the perfect shot for my rural entry.....and mine is almost cheating 'cause it's the last farm left where it sits.

One possible hope I had left had I not found the shot I entered was to head a half hour east of here where there is Amish country. That would have afforded me an entry guaranteed. But I also felt like that would have been cheating.....sort of like living in Iceland and entering a night challenge!.....8>)

I really do like your shot!

I did my best to be subjectively honest with my comments and assessments. I hope nobody's unhappy.

LOL..Chasing butterflies is very appropriate. I was chasing one around my back yard today try to get a shot. And..I have quite a few butterfly images in my portfolio. Thank you.

Commented on 30 or so images in the Blur Side challenge. Boy...that was harder than I thought since I am kind of a focus nut. Some very interesting images there. I think I like the motion blur images the best.
Some of the images are VERY spooky!!!!

Eve, every time I read your lovely and inspiring tagline, I hear this voice in my head that says,"Silence is golden.......duct tape is silver".

Am I just too weird for words or what?

You took the words right out of my mouth.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

It's another lovely sunny day in Iraq. Actually, it's incredibly smoky and hazy. Something large is burning in Baghdad and has been for a day or so, but do you think I could find out what on CNN, BBC, Fox, MSNBC? No! I suspect all the journalists who are "in" Baghdad are really in New Jersey and calling it in. It would be hard not to notice the very thick and large column of smoke, nor the fact that there's a very thick black layer of smoke on the ground everywhere this morning.

Another observation - I'm beginning to think the Morning Mortar guys have day jobs. They drive by, launch a few rounds, then head off to work. This morning I was in the shower. Argh. If they'd just wait 'til, say, midday, or midmorning...

No. I like your tag line. :)

In fact, it reminds me of the chorus to a song I heard while driving through Vermont and New Hampshire last week, loving life:
I am what I am, and I am what I'm not.
And I sure am happy with what I've got.
I live to love and laugh a lot
And that's all I need.
