It could be related to the chosen refresh rate. What's that set at? |

Might have something to do with your graphics card. What system are you running?

Refresh rate is set at 60, and system is xp home, if that is what you are asking.

Find out what graphics card you have and download the newest version. Sometimes re-branded graphics cards have slightly crippled software/drivers, like say you had a MadDog Predator MX4000 and used their driver/add-on CD. It is really nothing more than a re-branded NVIDIA GeForce4 MX4000.
If you aren't sure what your hardware is, download and run Belarc Advisor. In fact, run and print the html that it generates - it will list everything on your PC including serial numbers of your software and if there are any hotfixes/updates pending, etc |

Try a last known good start-up
Restat the system
Just after the BIOS screen press F8 you will be presented with some boot into windows options...
Choose "Last Known Good"
See if that gets you back to before the driver you loaded.
I don't know of many on-board video cards that will support Wide Screen Resolutions... you may get lucky. What pewter u got (model)

What (video) expansion slot do you have on your Mobo? PCI-E x16 or AGP?
ED: Looks like you have an AGP x2 in that compaq.

What do you plan on doing besides photo work? Old Games, New Games, Slideshows, Music etc...
I will steer you down the nVidia GPU path because their unified driver is the bomb...ATI Tech may have got better but I got so burned out on the piss-poor driver writing that I gave up on them years ago.
Intel Can't produce a Vid Card to save their life and then to support it is even a longer story for them. SiS has their struggles keeping up with nVidia and ATI.
Many manufacture the nVidia chipset cards - Trouble free brand are BFG Tech, EVGA, MSI, PNY, Chaintech and Gigabyte.
I don't think your box would do well with the latest 8000 series (DirectX 10 - Windows Vista runs Dx10 and not much stuff is written for it yet)
If you do Games/Slideshows/Stream Video I would probably go with the a 6000 or 7000.
The 5200 or 5500 nVidia will work but that would just barely get you by...would not be the best thing if you upgrade to Vista. There is a 5500 on newegg right now for 13 bucks after rebate.
I am out on Newegg right now so I can point you to some decent cards... Actually I'll go through my stuff tonight and see what I got lying around, I might just have a 5200 or 6200 collecting dust.
I run running this PNY 6200 in one on my mediacenter pc's @ 1440x900 (19" Widescreen)... been trouble free for a couple years... comes with HDTV dongle (you can plug into a HDTV via component cables) $50 after rebate...

i may look into that if i cant figure this out, ive continued messing around with it and i now can make the resolution 1680 by 1050, so the same ratio but off the screen, the 1440x900 is no longer an option though, how can i make that an option?

On the Adapter Tab when doing properties there should be a button near the bottom labeled "List all Modes" click it and it will show all modes supported by your vid or not.
Remember LCDs only do 60Hz and if you select a mode that freaks your monitor out...do not panic...don't click or touch anything and after 15 seconds you should be back to what it was. |

Well I prefer the ATI chipset unlike my teammate Andy, lol-- but we can argue that in our privat forum--
I agree in the Nvdia line would be nice for what you need--
Also condiser this card -- ATI
that can be readily picked up at most stores..
