I tend to use the DOF preview a bit (it just stops the ap down to the set value so you get an idea rather then seeing the full ap).
When using it with the FP mode on a 580EX flash (allows us Canon plebs to go over the max sync), I get a stream of light from the strobe (like a high speed strobe value). WTF is it trying to do?? I am just trying to understand what the thing is trying to do in this case.

It's a feature. It happens with all flash (Canon flashes at least). It's a modeling light. So you'll know where the light falls. I'm not certain if you can turn this feature off or not. There might be a setting around, but you'll have to google it.

Glad I'm not the only one that has experienced this. Seems like after I was checking a shot in the LCD, or setting the AF points, or something, the 580EXII would go off like a very high speed strobe and kept catching me off-guard. Had to aim at the floor real quick to prevent completely blinding everyone at the live band shoot on Sat night. Man that thing puts out!

Thx! Seems I "lurned" something new today.... Never knew that.... Have to pull out the old film SLR and see is it works the same way. Seems like something that might be useful in some cases :-)

It's also a great attention getter at receptions when people with point and shoots stand next to you to snipe in on your shot and the subject doesn't know who to look at first. Just fire it off and you'll get their attention, then wait for the smile after the confused 'huh?' look passes. And with a lightspere on it puts on quite a show. Great with babies too.

Interesting way to get everyone's attention. I'll have to try that.

If the built-in flash is up, hitting the DOF preview button on my D200 will also strobe the flash. Surprised me a little the first time it happened.

you should be able to turn off the modeling light on the flash, I can on my 430ex, in my manual it says its there to check lighing and shadows but not to exceede using it more that I think its 10 times in half hour or the like so it doesnt over heat...
