My 10D showed up Monday, but I had to wait until today for lenses and CF cards! Here are my first pics (Jonah and Ethan were hanging out with me while I open the package). These were with the 50mm f1.4, natural window light.
I'm excited to be up and running... Can't wait to go get some shots!

i can see 'em. post some 70-200 shots when you can! also, could you possibly take a shot (with your F717) of the 10D with the 70-200 on it? i'd like to get an idea of the size...

Thanks Ram, though I'm just concerned with the 70-200 f/4L and exactly how big it is... |

Sorry this took some time, James, but here is a shot of the camera with both lenses. (Keep in mind this does not include the lens hood on the 70-200, that adds another 3 1/2 to 4"!

Thanks, Kollin...
I'm getting geared up to make some money with this stuff. I've got exhibits going up in three different coffee shops over the next 8 weeks. I've had lots of inquiries about portrait work (especially the photoshopped, non-traditional portraits) which is why I'm researching studio lighting. An author contacted me yesterday about shooting all the photos for five books he is currently writing... All kinds of leads coming in. I'm hoping to create some income...
Then, Intel called yesterday and they want me to do a major project for them (I do consulting and project management in the semiconductor and bio pharmaceutical industries).
Now I have to decide where to put my time... Guaranteed income, or possible income doing something way more fun...
I guess I'll burn the candle at both ends and do both for now.

I bought a new Tamrac Expedition 5 at the same time. I thought it would hold alot, but it's going to be crowded when my 100mm macro gets here...
Do you have a link to some 10D shots yet? PBase or anywhere else?

I took some candids at a pig roast I was at a few nights ago, mainly snapshots. Struggling with the extremely short DOF. Found that the auto white balance isn't great for indoors...converted everything to black and white. These were shot at iso 800 or 1600, most between f/1.4 and 2...first efforts, so I thought it wasn't that bad. Photo.net is going very slowly today, so patience is required.

i envy you all with your big cameras and excellent DOF.
Sigh...I'll just stick with my weenie "prosumer" and my fantastic masking and gaussian blur abilities for now. :)

I'm going to love using a DSLR. I swore I would wait until you could get a 10 Megapixel DSLR with no field of view factor (ie 24mm lens is 24, not 42mm) for under $2000 before I bought one.
I guess I lied!
I used Nikon film SLR's for years and years, and going to digital was like having a little 'trinket' to play with. It feels good to wrap my hands around a real sized camera again. I do miss being able to take a shot by using the LCD flipped up and not having to look through the viewfinder. That angle view finder for the 10D seemed like a waste of money until I had to lay down on the ground to get a shot today!! I may just buy that thing, especially for use with the 100mm Macro that is on its way.
JD
oh yeah, thanks for the encouragement! I haven't been able to get out to take some shots, so I've been driving the kids nuts following them around with the camera all day. (its been raining off and on for a couple of days, very unusual for here)

Nice pics! You called them snapshots, but I love candids and photos of people in general, when they are done well. Black and white was a great choice... That DOF (or lack thereof) at 1.4 is crazy! I have some shots of my kids where part of their face is sharp as sharp gets, but their eyebrows are blurry. Here is about 3/4" of DOF!

Yeah it's very crazy. It gives a look I really like, and it was kinda cool to shoot with no flash at dusk. I can see where the auto DOF mode will be very useful.
I agree about the SLR being exciting...more possibility, more challenge, more reward. It's a huge, huge difference from the F717. I personally think that the real viewfinder and the ability to whip it around with no video lag, and being able to focus manually is way better than the live preview which everyone raves about. With the DOF preview there's no reason why you can't get a really good idea of what you're getting. I'm less confident with white balance (shoot in RAW!) but much, much more confident that the shot's in focus. |
