I can't find your question...but anyways.

All things being equal I understand the sport/non-sport part of the world. I would vote an excellent flower higher than an REALLY good sports shot. *shrug* I guess for me (as always this crap deteriorates into "how I vote") I vote on the merit of a picture - in and of itself, as something that could a) be put on a wall or b) be sold.

Regardless of all other "creative, art" reasons - I shoot to a) see it displayed and/or b) sell it.

I think that is the way to do it. I agree with that completely...I wish I could see the gap here. I, too, vote on the merit of a photo -- regardless (unless I can't stomach it, I abstain). Maybe I am missing it. I don't mean to frustrate you...

No one's trying to say sports are bad... just that some of us have no association of which sport is when.

I rather liked the baseball and football shots in the seasonal challenge. Being female and not entirely devoted to sports by no means lessons the universal (well, maybe not universal, but certainly, American) concept that baseball is spring/summer, football is fall/winter. I especially like the use of football as a seasonal theme since the term "football season" is quite common. It's as unique a take on the theme as the cooking seasonings shot we saw (should only women have "gotten" that one?). I thought these were a much more satisfying interpretion of the challenge than the many flower and insect shots.

I debated a bit on whether or not to jump in on this, and I certainly don't want to slam anybody who either liked or disliked my "Boys of Summer" shot, but here goes...

There have been countless forum threads on this site that go to the heart of what several of y'all have been discussing, what's been called the "WOW" factor. If a voter isn't wowed by a photo, s/he isn't going to score it much higher than a 7 (which is still pretty high considering the average score of the average winner here), usually based on the technical proficiency of the shot. But even a technically mediocre-to-poor shot will score higher than that if the voter is moved in some way. (Even this week's last place photo received a 10.)

I think that's what has happened here. All of the comments I've received have been valid. Technically, I really wish I could have gotten more of the kid's left knee in there. He was surrounded by lots of people, though, so I got lucky to isolate him and the ballplayer in the shot without anything else covering them. I'm quite pleased with the DOF ΓΆ€“ I never managed to pull that off before I got my new camera.

As far as the emotion goes, though, I'm really happy with it. I'm a baseball fan, and when I see a picture like this one it suddenly doesn't seem so long ago that I was that kid hoping to catch a home run ball. I think that touched a nerve in some folks; for others, it just isn't there.

And that's fine. Both points of view are perfectly valid. I have run into the same thing plenty of times in voting here on dpc; my 8's end up in the bottom ten scores, my 4's end up in the top ten. And every time, I scratch my head and wonder what the hell's wrong with you people. (How did "Fall Rain" end up in 33rd? Yeesh. Tough crowd.) Then again, most of you would wonder why I gave 5's to three of this week's top ten.

I want to thank mavrik for championing my photo. No matter what score I got, there's no higher praise for a photograph than to have someone feel moved enough by it to want to show it to everyone they know and to want to make it a part of their life.

OK, I will have to put this thead back on track. ;-)

I just saw kosmik's post in another same kinda thread about this Seasons shot he took.

I was sure this shot would've been in the top 10! To me it is the perfect sumer shot. The pastel colors, the dragon fly.. not to mention an excellent macro! This could go on the cover of National Geographic! But that's just my opinion! ;o)
