There wasn't a thread already, so thought I'd post the link:

Amazon page

Amazon are the ones who dropped the silence on the 40D as well, so I assume this isn't fake.

For those who can't be bothered reading it, the highlights are:

21.1Mp
3"LCD
Same focus system as the 1DMKIII (same bugs I imagine as well)
Self cleaning sensor
LP-E4 battery (same as 1DMKIII?)

$7,999 release price.

And a whole heap of other stuff..

Cheers, Me.

It looks like someone posted a Manny Librodo image or two on Amazon to sell the 1D Mark III.

Maybe from his workshop???

That sorta looks like one of his, but with too much noise filtering... Odd image to post to sell a camera, it looks over processed and 'fake'...

Be interesting to see how long it is before one of the gear-hogs on here has one of those 21Mp beasts in their bag. Not going to be me, that's for sure!

Holy Smoke... I was all set to go for the 1Ds2 in October, but I may have to wait now. That looks awesome!

yeah.. looks pretty nice.

I am eager to see the 5D page now :) hope it comes.

i wish the 1d seires and the 5D took the same bp 511 batteries. Or at least if there was an adapter thing to stick two 511 batteries in the 1D slot. I think there is a number of pros (myself included) which have a 1D and a 5D backup. It is a pain having to keep two kinds of batteries charged and ready.

" Same focus system as the 1DMKIII (same bugs I imagine as well) "

As a Mark III owner I'd just like to say this :
Straight out the box the focus on my Mark III has been outstanding. I upgraded from a 20D.
I use all 24-70mm F2.8 USM L, 135mm F2 and 70-200mm IS F2.8 and the 1st challenge for my Mark III were some firedancers doing a night-time display and the only light source I had were rapidly moving fire sticks / chains.
I shot images at ISO 1250 which had very little noise which in itself is a godsend only strengthened by the fact the camera focused without hesitation on ---- firey sticks in darkness ---- ( a real test of ANY camera ) and 95% were keepers.
I dont understand the bad press on the focus system as I have done tests on everything in many light conditions / ISO's / lenses and the focus has been flawless, especially on the 135mm F2.
Feel free to browse my gallery of my mark III's straight out of the box shoot at

//www.fotothing.com/DavidNewland/photo/13cf9684e059dc54fe06ec71aae1baf4/start=75

I have since shot weddings, birds, night shots and have not since once had any focus problems at all. I refuse to believe I have the only working copy on the planet ;)
Take care and happy snapping all !
- David

P.S. ( edit ) For those of you who wish the 1d took the 511 batteries, try shooting a Mark III with the 70-200mm IS F2.8 ( a legendary battery eater ! ) and see how long it lasts for - you'll never want to use a 511 again ;)

yeah i DO shoot with the 70-200 IS 2.8 on a 5D with the 511 batteries. They have lasted a good long time, especially with a battery pack to stick in two batteries. Yesterday in fact I shot constantly for 4 hours at a wedding with just that set up. I just checked the little battery meter on the camera and it still shows full. No complaints on battery life from me.

Psssst...Am talking about a "single" Mark III battery vs a "single" 511.

08/19/2007 09:47:10 AM · #11
well i have used a single battery as well and didn't have any problems with battery life :)

but my point was that if they made an adapter for the mark III to take the 511 batteries, it would hold 2 511 batteries - which is why i used 2 in my previous post.

Understood.
I still love the Mark III battery life though - and the built in vertical grip is great too!
Back to the topic - any other Mark III user's experienced focusing problems, and if so please elaborate? ( lenses used, focal point ).
I selected the middle focal point as my primary.

I agree.

However... I've found that the new battery on the Mark III lasts FOREVER. I have never yet had the thing run out on me, even when shooting a full day of sports with IS turned on the whole time. It's amazing. I thought the 5D and 20D with two BP-511's in the grip lasted a long time, but the Mark III's battery lasts even longer.

Edit to add: I know this because I have run pairs of BP-511's dry and had to replace them. That has yet to happen with the Mark III battery.

I've shot 4-5 games on one Black Diamond battery with my 1DMKII averaging 150 shots per game. I carry 2 batteries with me all the time and since moving from the original 1D, to the MKII and now the MKIIn, I havent ever had a situation where I needed the second battery, but I still wont leave the house to shoot without a backup.

I was extremely worried about going out shooting sports with the Mark III without a spare battery. I've always carried spares with me in the past and have needed them. But the Mark III battery costs something like $115 and was out of stock every where I looked (at the time).

So I took my charger with me and figured I might recharge in between one of the games as necessary. But it never happened. I've now shot thousands of pictures of Lacrosse and Soccer (that's thousands of images on a single charge) without ever getting the battery meter even close to empty.

I've stopped worrying. :-)

21MP is REALLY going to test the quality of the glass you put in front of it. :-)

Lets be honest, if your spending $8k on a body you probably arent going to toss a kit lens in front of it anyway. Most professionals arent going to be using anything less then L glass or at least real high end prosumer glass anyway.

Yeah, I know no one is gonna put a kit lens in front of it. Even using L-glass, 21MP is testing the limits of the 35mm lens architecture.

I'm waiting till the 2009/2010 models come out as referenced in the other thread. I'll start saving now (I tell myself), but I plan on pulling the trigger on the full frame 1 series at that time.

Ya mean I'm gonna have to buy another lens? ;)

Honestly, I'm at a loss whether to wait for the mkIII, or just go for the mkII. I wonder how much the latter's price will drop in January...

Interestingly, that pixel count puts the pixel pitch at 6.4µm, which is about the same pitch as an 8MPx APS-C camera. So in theory won't really tax lenses any more severely over the central portion of the frame than, say, a 20D. But it *will* see the periphery of the image circle, and therein lies the rub.
I do expect that it will continue the 1-series (and 5D) trait of having a pretty minimalist AA filter, which will then make it a little more taxing on the glass.
FWIW, all of today's DSLRs are pretty severe tests of lenses; even my old 10D readily showed up defects in consumer and some L glass.
I see that Amazon has pulled the page... there seems to be a concurrent announcement of a 14/2.8L II lens. That's an interesting development in itself.
