Hello All,

I got the Rebel XT a couple of weeks ago and am *loving* the camera. I'm new to the DSLR world and was wondering if the XT would work decently for IR photography (with a hoya or other filter), or if I'd have to modify the camera.

Thanks for your help!

Canons are, in general, inferior to Nikon or some other brands for IR because they have such a strong IR filter. It can be done though. It causes longer exposure times though.

The canon 350d is not great for ir but it can be done.
Your looking at exposures of 3 seconds plus. Not great if you want to have trees in your shots.
If you did want to try it you have ideal lens in the canon 50mm f1.8 as it shows no hotspot.
This was the best i could do with the canon 300d and 50mm f1.8 lens. looks ok at this size but wouldn`t want to print it. Also a painfully long 8 seconds exposure.

Oh, beaten to it by the Dr.
I hope he never tries ir :)

thanks for the info - I don't think IR is going to be a major part of my photography, but could be something fun down the road.

Marbro, as an IR Guru, I noticed that you used to take IR photos with an Olympus C2000. I have an Olympus C3040, which is (I think) quite similar to the C2000.

Do you think I might have better luck with my old Olympus then?

The best ones are the older ones. I`m sure the c3040 isn`t good for ir :(
The ones to look out for are c-2020, c-2000 and c-2100 uz.
Also the nikon coolpix 950 i think has the same sensor.

Great ir link here: //dpfwiw.com/ir.htm

good luck finding those old olympus cameras. When I first tried IR I started looking for them but no luck.

Instead, I bought a 300D used from someone here and had it converted. I like being able to shoot at regular shutter speeds.

They do turn up on ebay now and then but they are still only 2 megapixels.

Having your camera converted is the best option of all. It must be nice not having to lug around your tripod or worrying about the wind.
