I also hope the best photo wins but unfortunately the most creative, most original, most artistic one probably doesn't have a chance. I'll take that any day, photoshopped or not over the carbon copy photos that typically grace the front page.

I am with you Richard. The Free Study and the Rural challenge images are amongst the lowest quality I have seen on dpc. Not being negative here (as I do get in trouble when I say this kind of stuff), but most looksed like snapshots from the side of the road. It seems we needed to call the Free Study Challenge the "Anything You Can Aim A Lens At Challenge"

The quality has definitely been down of late...yet in the middle, some gems emerge...but not as many as usual.

Defnately some wonderful gems in the 48 Hour Free Study, a handfull in fact.

I also agree that there is a huge percent of images that are just snap shot quality, and I guess mine if also one of those.

Sorry about that.

I still have my scores trned off......

In the 48 hours for this challenge I shot around 400-600 pictures (I have no idea because I found one that looked nice and went with it). I think for a free study speed challenge this is a great time to do it. I agree that there are some entries where some people entered something for the sake of entering. Others though did rise to the occasion and created something nice to look at.

For the expert free study this month my shot could have been entered under minimal if not basic. Of course that's if I stick with my best picture so far...

I agree - though, that will be a cold day...

Actually, in such a challenge I would rather see the most common subjects explored with the goal to shoot it in an uncommon way. To shoot a rare subject would be cheating in my book.

Well, the Blue Ribbon is most likely claimed then ( ursula)... she takes the coolest unique flower shots! :)

Subject matter has absolutely nothing to do with out of boxness, originality, or artistic value...it's all about how you see the subject matter and how you choose to present it to the viewer. Exoticness is a false God...a dull presentation is a dull presentation no matter what you're looking at.

Now that the Challenge is over, I can post a comment that actually can refer to something. My shot got extremely low marks, which, based upon some of the comments in here, I was expecting. There was one comment posted to my shot which had real value, and I will try to learn from it.

I gave a very high mark (9) to the winning shot; I really liked it :-) After seeing some of the comments, I went ahead and cast votes. Some of the Top 30 were, IMHO, utterly rotten, but enough of them were shots with real Art in them that I was pleased at the overall results. A few shots that I valued highly got low marks, but then, they tended to be shots that had effects and filters, so I marked them highly, while most people did not.

All in all, I'm really disappointed in the lack of creativity in usage, in technique, although not necessarily in subject, that was displayed in this Challenge. Even some of the shots that I really liked did not really reflect the actual thrust of this Challenge, IMHO. That's just my opinion, of course, but I took the Rules at face value and went with them. The fact that so few people did is really sad. And for the person who claimed lack of time to do anything "special", I'm sorry but I can't buy that, not as a general rule. It might have applied to you last weekend, but you can't state it as an absolute, as some of us did, in fact, have the time to open up the "box" and tinker with the innards a little. All I can do is hope that people will at least think about what the possibilities could be, and do a little artistic exploring.

With the expert free study in the offing, perhaps your desire for more obvious editing will be sated.

Hmmm....

Well, I submitted a first ever B&W entry with some different PP than I have ever used and got a 6+ for the first time ever in a Free Study.

I mean no malice whatsoever, and I hope over time that DPC is as helpful to you as it has been to me,.......perhaps you'll do better and appreciate more the offerings once you see, study, and emulate some of the techniques both classic and current that you'll see every day here at DPC, in challenges, side projects, and just regular portfolio submissions.

First of all thanks for positive comments I usually receive from you.

I think there are too many entries in the free studies, and people it seems just want to participate some how. I did not enter because I did not have anything good. I could have if I had something presentable, just did not want to crowd the challenge.
Just because of this reason I have only participated in one free study so far.

Thanks for this positive comment I received in this challenge.
Someone actually sort of understood what I was trying to do and didn't just comment OOf!
"You certainly are sweet... love the colors in this shot... the oof b/g is perfect... you even got catch lights in their eyes... a minor quibble is I wish the focus was a tad more crisp but the softness does give it an antique feel "
If you look the eyes are sharp! The rest wasn't meant to be!

On first look it does look like you just weren't focused. But great job on it! I see now where you were going with that image, but that's a hard technique to perfect. I have only seen a couple of pros pull it of really well.
