You can pay to be able to upload pics, and have people vote on them(like maybe 3 votes per month, if your lucky and know a few people already on it), and on top of that, the voting is for the most part rigged! Hah, you say. I am so convinced it is that I watched the names of the people who had the highest votes for 3 weeks every day. Guess what? Only 22 different names came up. Wow, thats alot of names, huh? Not when you consider there is 6 photos per day(count them, 6) that plaster the front page as highest votes. On top of that, towards the bottom, there are 42 other pics that also appear as category winners. 22 names doesn't sound like a lot now, does it? That's not all, just wait till you see how the voting scale works. Some peoples vote count for more than 1. So, for instance, if someone with a rating of 2 votes you an 8, and someone with a lot higher rating votes you a 5, guess what? Tough sh*&^&%% for you. Unless you are one of elite that has been on the site for a while, you will be made to feel like you suck at photography. Here's the kicker. If you want to help out a "friend", you can go to there profile, look at there pics and what category they are posted in, and then go vote it high, or low if it is a foe. That's what else is out there. Needless to say, I joined here instead(no brainer). This site is very fair, has many more options than the other site, and I feel has a lot more experienced people willing to help and give advice, not shoot you down. Also, DPC takes very unkindly to cheaters(very very unkindly), where as this is how DA lives on. As long as they keep the top dogs happy, they will stay online. So I say, join there, then you will know how poor other sites are compared to DPC. And noo matter what anyone else says, this is how I feel about DA. Nope, can't change my mind, not gonna happen. Sorry, but I had to add to this rant. I know personal attacks are not tolerated, but I hope this isn't considered personal, being it's a gripe or two, or three, about a sorry site. I tell you now, at first this site(DPC)is overwhelming, but once you sit back and read, look at the pics, check out user profiles, listen to people, you start to warm up, and one day, you will feel like your at home. Quick for some, longer for others, but this is a wonderful site, especially since you have the option to use it for free. No one here will not answer your questions because you are not a paying member. They will answer you the same. No question is too stupid, although some are sillier than others. I have been a registered user for about 8 months, and now am a paying member. I sat back and watched, participated, read the forums, liked the way concerns were handled, and decided this is the best site for me. Could have still had it for free, but I felt the need for more, which you get as a member. You won't regret it. |
My name is Eric Elsten. I am the administrator and owner of DA, and this post is not accurate. DA is a complex site that is designed to be the fairest photography contest on the planet. Allow me to respond to these comments.
1) You pay to upload
- Not true. The site unlocks upload slots as you win awards. The idea is to compete with your best work first, this is by design to keep the voting pool lean so all users can collect more votes. If you choose, then yes you may pay to get more slots, but it is discouraged, thus the reason the price is high.
2) 3 votes per month
- Not true. The average is approximately 1 vote per day per image. This is by design as the voting pool is random to be fair to all members
3) The voting is rigged
- Not true. The formula used to compute each image score is exposed and accountability for every single vote is available to subscribers and to the site administration. The site employs a very sophisticated collusion detection mechanism to identify and root out friend / foe voting.
4) The weight system
- DA is designed to allow those who perform the best have the strongest voice within the community. This is designed to protect the photographer not the voter. Nobody can vote for him or herself, however the weight system prevents inexperienced / malicious users from disrupting the ratings.
I have a great respect for DPC and the community here. I take no issue with any photographer who prefers DPC over DA. I simply wish to publish the facts about this as the post contains much false information. |

Absolutely NOT...comments of this ilk pre-suppose that all newbies either know nothing, are malicious by nature, or disruptive.
If indeed only those of experience were allowed to vote in democratic venues, then I fear that the vast majority of the populace would never get to express their views.
If we do opt for something of this ilk, why not simply appoint four or five art critics to tell us what we should like.

Someone is voting images with good technicals that meet the challenge ones and twos. I'd hope it wasn't someone with experience.

I would suspect that people with experience know that there's more to an image than technicals and meeting the challenge. |

If we ever went to the method that the only opinions that matter are those with the longest string of ribbons, that's the day I leave. |

Not saying that at all. I just think that there should be more weight to those with longevity on the site (not necessarily highest scoring).
And yes mk, I know that quite well, thanks.

You can certainly hope, but I would wager good money that some of the harshest voters on this site are perhaps some of the most technically competent people here.
There are people on this site that I would be absolutely thrilled if they voted my image a 4, knowing that their grading scale is indeed severe.
I would also wager that the highest scores are in all probability doled out by newbies that are ever so impressed by the images they see on this site.
The 1 and 2 scores you bemoan are more likely cast by individuals that have a problem with the image depiction as opposed to the quality of the image. Some people are aghast at nudity, others with topics involving violence...and technical merits seemingly matter little to them.

One of the draws of this site, for me, is the democracy and fairness of the voting structure; one vote, and ONLY one, per person, equal to any one other person's vote.

Yup, a few would. So you might as well just appoint those few as a panel of judges for the rest, as that's how it would end up anyway. |

Equality, one of the benefits of freedom and fairness. This is why I am a member of DPC. |

Hmmm... yes, having been registered for two years, but not even competed, I would hope any sort of weight system would be based strictly on longevity (or based on good voting history? Kinda like Santa...) |
