After getting in the bottom 3% on the last Free Study, it's pretty nice to have a score on the good side of 5. It almost makes me feel like a real photographer!

I'm likely to be slightly MIA for a bit - I've lost my card-reader and one of my cards :(

I'm also exceptionally disappointed with how my Toys photo did.

Oh - and we're waiting for approval for a mortgage, since we put an offer on a house yesterday, which was accepted by the seller just a few short hours later ... //www.mls.ca/PropertyDetails.aspx?PropertyID=5956233

I am also going to be MIA for at least a week. I leave in an hour to fly to Idaho to collect my daughter, PaulinaRD, to bring her home. My family is using this opportunity to gather together to scatter my fathers ashes as well.

I will be taking photos, but will have little computer access.

See you all in a week.

Well...both my free study and urban landscape are losing a lot of ground! My worst scores so far! Ah well...at least I am branching out to take different types of photographs so am learning in the process.
Ouch...just read the comments posted in the Urban landscape thread and I think I know why mine is doing so badly. I interpreted the challenge poorly "Of, relating to, or located in a city" :(

The best part about my current challenge entry was that my first comment came from someone in Team Suck!

Some really good scores going here for TSers! Go Go!!

I'm doing okay in the Free Study (finally glad to be breaking 5.0 with those, and I'm thrilled with any Free Study that is near my average score, which this is):

Rural, which is not the shot I worked so hard for, but one that came by chance and I really like, was at 6.4 this morning when I got up (at around 15 votes), then dropped sub-6, and now is hovering just at, which is a fine place to be (and with Jeb around in rural, I have little chance of having highest score, heh):

By the way, 2 of 3 on my free study are kind comments from Team Suckers :) Thanks!

Best of luck to all,

Here is my score check-in:

Fast Food
Avg Vote: 4.0407

Urban Landscapes II
Avg Vote: 5.4211

Free Study XVII
Avg Vote: 5.5804

I knew my Fast Food was going to be low, no surprise there. Urban, I actually thought would score higher but I like the shot so it is all good.

Don't be too disappointed. It is a good technical shot. There isn't anything to complain about. It isn't a DPC "over the top" type image though. As long as you are happy with the image that is the most important thing.

Good luck on the house.

Hey, same here! It's bombing of course, but finally broke the no-comment barrier with a TSer comment. :)

Woo! Over here, my image went from personal top 5 to what would be my personal best score! I hope the trolls don't find me..

:-p

Back to the 4 range...hard work, keeping my average under 5...but the comments are mostly good.

Kashi, I also misplaced my card reader and card recently and virtually had kittens until I realized where it was and reclaimed it. Hope you find it. Also, good luck on the mortgage...I may be in the market for a house soon too...

Barbara, sorry to hear about your dad's passing. We await your return.

PS: Tomorrow morning is Get On Fifi The Ginormous Clyde Day...I truly think everything will go well, I've prepped her as best as I can, the horse likes me and has a lovely attitude towards the whole idea of work...95% of the time it's uneventful...but I have to be relaxed and alert at the same time without being tense, as I must be ready to bail if need be...wish me luck!

Just submitted my Free Study shot for this month, and I'm now disappearing off again. I'll be in Belgrade for the next 3 weeks, so I might be MIA for a little while. Saying that, Internet there is pretty readily available (unlike at my last destination), so the chances are I'll pop in pretty often anyway.

I think one of the things that I'm happiest about is the 11 comments, most of them *extremely* complimentary.

If you see more lemurs, hanging out in coffee shops and street corners, take lots of pictures for us.

I seem to be stuck in a 4.8 rut. Upside Down finished there. FS and Urban Landscape are both there now with only one comment.

NikonJeb and Meyers, can't wait to see your Landscapes.

Thanks to meyers and JuliBoc - you guys found my landscape and liked it, and said so! Team Suck so totally rocks. :-)

I have a rural score that is now climbing again; I'm not sure what to do. It makes me a bit nervous. Good comments on it, too, and some from team suckers (and others here who I like and respect); free study staying in place, which is also good:

I'm not gonna match Jeb in rural, but that's okay by me; right now it (like RobM's) has a shot at a personal best, and that's way good enough for me :)

Question: How do people feel about a non-expert edited shot for this month's free-study. The shot I have I like, but it's nothing for expert, and I don't want to turn it into digital art. I could simply load it to my portfolio and ask for comments here as well as enter it in a challenge where it really doesn't "fit"; thoughts? Suggestions?

Best,

RobH

It sounds like you neither want to get spanked, nor shoehorn it.

Give it up and let us ooh and ah!.....8>)

The only reason I am even going to enter any more free studies will be if there's another speed one and to finish up in the Marathon.....which I will be unlikely to do again.

My worst scores this year have been Free Studies.
08/16/2007 06:28:58 AM · #2223
Expert editing is available for the free study but certainly not required. If you have a shot that stands on its own photographically, then go for it if that's what you wish. Don't worry about the editing. Half the stuff I enter in advanced editing challenges is done under basic editing rules.
08/16/2007 08:01:40 AM · #2224
Ditto what Deb says - submitting an image that doesn't take full advantage of the editing rules isn't a shoehorn. The edit rules are a limitation, not a requirement. That being said, though, with all the "wow" digital art stuff that will likely be in that challenge, yours might suffer in the scoring.

But any image should "fit" in a free study, so take your chances and turn your scores off. :)

I don't think anyone is going to dock you points because your photo is photographic. Tolerance of one thing does not necessarily mean intolerance of another. Enter it!
