Hi all

Deb - wow, hope that cardboard box wasn't menacing you in any way - got disapproving looks for LOL'ing about the 'no pow, no chow' sign...glad you're in a safer(?) environment...

Kelli, congrats!!! Now you're a real photog! Woohoo!

Nothing new on this end...did shoot a really nice pic yesterday for Rural but guess what? Time/date stamp screwed up, says I took pic on Feb 17, so have to re-shoot...tried to get some Fast food done but don't know if it's challenge-worthy...and still no sign of my pendant, so I'm resigned to the fact that it's likely gone for good. Oh well, maybe it's for the better. Still miss it though, had it for 10 yrs.

On the bright side I have no clients this weekend so I get TWO WHOLE DAYS OFF!!!!!! :-)

Everyone have a nice weekend, going off to a festival in Perth celebrating the stinkin' rose.

Bye for now

VERY easy to get along with and most supportive of friends' work.

A little hypercritical of her own abilities......where have we seen that before.....but an eloquent and effusive commenter.

I see she has already stopped by!

You'll like her!

Thank you Jeb - LOL...Peach is right..most of my images are kinda fuzzy :)

Hello! Enjoy yourself. Lots of comfortable seating around here, and plenty of nuts and fruit...

LOL..then I should fit in fine since I am a nut!!!!

Are you salty? Would you like to be roasted? There are lots of different kinds of nuts here... we currently have one baking in the Middle East, a pistachio, I think...

My son is roasting in the Middle East right now :( - but is coming home in a couple of months.

elphin, where is he? Maybe I can drop by and say hello. :-)

And this environment is definitely less safe than the one from which I came (if you don't count the drivers in the environment from which I came). And a lot busier.

eek, please be careful Deb!

He's at Speicher but does convoys to places he can't tell me...lol. I looked it up on google maps and it looks like a barren and desolate area. The heat gets to him sometimes but all in all..he is doing good. Luckily he was not one of those who got his time extended by 3 months :)

Gotta be really tough for a mother -- and for any family member. Glad there's a light at the end of the tunnel. And welcome. That's quite a recommendation you got from Jeb.

I have a question re cameras and am looking for some guidance.
I am looking at the Nikon D40X, the Canon Rebel xt and the Canon Rebel xti.
I went to a local camera shop and I like the weight of these particular models.
My question is...I am totally confused about lenses and don't know which one (or two) to buy. I like to do close up and macro shots but also want the flexibility to do other types. I am a total rookie at DSLR's so am leaning towards the D40x. What would you recommend?
If anyone has the time...I would sure like some opinions.
Thanks so much
Eve

My 2 cents worth.

Depends on how much money you want to spend, what you want to take photographs of, and how concerned you are about focus, maximum aperture and focus distance.

If you can afford it, you are better off buying a camera body and buying a separate lens not the camera body with the kit lens. If you buy a good lens, it is possible it will cost more than your camera body.

Here are example photos from each camera:

D40x
Canon Rebel 350DXT
Canon 400Dxti

Find some photographs that you like and check what camera and lens was used to take the photograph.

If you decide about a body, ask people what their most used lens is.

My most used lens is this one, second most used lens is this one, and my third most used lens is this one.

another big factor: what feels comfortable in your hand? since you're starting from scratch, that should be a big factor in your decision.

Hey guys! I'm finally home :)
I came back from Madagascar with about 5500 photos in the end. I'm gradually sifting through them all and editing the best ones, so they'll be going up in my portfolio over the next, well, couple of months/years...
Here's the first one:

Btw, ephln, I vote for the the Xti. But then, I'm biased :)

Ooh, August blur challenge, you say? :)
See, um, the lemurs jump rather quickly. And maybe a more boring and conventional photographer would have had the correct shutter speed on at the time. Me, on the other hand, weeell... I was too busy chasing them and going 'Eeee, looook, cute fluffy thing, how cute, come here lemur, come here, cuuuuute! *bounce*'

Oh, or can you be OOB and submit images which are visually sharp, but conceptually or ideologically blurry? :p

Eve, I think any of the three cameras would suit you fine. I would not get to tied up in brands as they are all quite capable. I would suggest running to your local camera store and playing around with each and seeing which one suits your fancy. If you have a friend that has either Canon or Nikon you might prefer to get the same brand and you could share lenses.

As for lenses, if this is your first SLR, you will be fine with the kit lens or you could look into a prime to get your started such as a 35mm f2 (equivalent FOV to a ~50mm).

That's how I started out, bought just one lens the 35mm f2. My 2nd favorite lens, though my personal favorite is an old 80's model, my 105mm 2.5 AIS.

Cheers and I am sure you'll love your new SLR whatever you choose.

Welcome Evelyn,
Interesting to see that I just put up a shot in the sharpness/blur side challenge that I took in the greater Petaluma area. What a coincidence.
You'll enjoy this group, I believe.
Great folks.

Is anybody working on the speed challenge? I just put up my entry. I hope they like it, because I do. Aw shucks, that's always a bad sign.

Deb, I thought of you today at the county fair. Why, you might ask, would I think of my friend from Texas, lately of Germany, and now in a hot sandy place? Because apparently one of the rides came from your home away from home. :)

What was most amusing was that the announcer kept calling it "1001 Nights."

I'm in speed challenge, fast food, and urban.
My fast food challenge is going to score very very low, but hey it was better than the alternative plus I like taking lumps. I have a feeling both my speed entry and urban will score well, but I have been wrong before.
08/12/2007 10:04:36 AM · #2073
I'm going for a brown in fast food (I love the photo, so it's ethical :P ). I took some really cool, lowscoring photos for the free study speed challenge, *and* I have a landscape that might score decently (just watch, that will be my lowest scoring one).

I'm in Fast Food (with less than 50 entries, I'm very hopeful) and the speed challenge.

Yeah, but I'm soooooooo waffling between two shots.

I'm going to do Urban, I think, despite the fact that I live in the heart of Pennsylvania farm country.......go figure!
