Avoid them....

Especially with Compact Flash cards coming down in price. The other week I found myself needed more memory so I grabbed my 4gig Hitachi Microdrive (which is my extra space card).

Well, it didn't respond. And is completely dead. Now, mind you....this is my replacement for the first one that failed.

In fact, I probably used the first drive a dozen times before it failed. And this drive maybe 3-4 uses.

*bah*

Of course, I'll never get compensation for the $140 I spent on it when I bought it. But my personal advice is avoid them.

(Yes, some will express how they've had no problems. Don't risk it. Spend the extra 20%-40%.)

I couldn't agree more but to me they are mini hard drives and are more sensitive to shock and the like than their flash memory counterparts. Ive never used them but still would have a hard time trusting them with my photos, just my opinion though...

I use a microdrive in my studio - no worries about bumping it around, etc. and regular CF cards when I'm moving. The microdrive hasn't let me down and for the price... I'm in.

I use flash drive but mostly for the data transfer or keeping important data for a while and as soon as I am close to my computer, I move that to either HDD or DVD depending on the data.

Look at the bright side though, at least it failed before putting more images on it.

Flash is the future baby! I've been hearing about some REALLY large cards getting ready to come down the pipeline soon. My local dealer has sold 16GB cards and I'm doing some checking this coming week on a rumored 32GB.

Although I will say that the sweetest currently available on the street for immediate purchase was an 8GB 266x... A little less than 180 USD.
