I think the only thing that can be done is to send it back to canon and have it dismantled and cleaned.

Good Luck

Years ago, on a Nikon lens. Needs to go in to a reputable repair shop to be dismantled, cleaned, reassembled and resealed. No way around it.

A lens I picked up with some other camera equipment on eBay has fungus on the glass. I called the local camera shop and they wouldn't touch it. Was told in a friendly, joking manner that I now owned a nice soft focus lens. :)

The problem, I was told (and have since read up on) is that in many cases if the fungus has been on the glass for any amount of time it actually can etch the glass and/or coating.

I've decided to go ahead and try cleaning this particular lens myself using the 50-50 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and ammonia. Don't have much to lose in my case (will do it outside to keep those spores away). A basic lens cleaning runs $100, so what the heck - eh?

Here's some links on fungus and camera lens:

I actually dont find fungus to be too much of an issue. I've used a couple old Pentax-M lenses that had a little fungus in them, with no negative effect on optical quality, none that i could see anyways...

So is fungus a common problem? Is it caused by poor care, or bad luck? Is this more likely to occur in older lenses, or are modern lenses susceptible?
