Are you sick of getting useless comments? Or do you like to give them? Or do you spend far too long typing them, only to delete them just before you vote.
With the aim of getting more useful comments, feel free to share your favourite comments, or your most hated comments, or your biggest bugbears about image problems.
Here's my list...
1) White balance is too blue. Warm it up a bit.
2) Centred subject is boring here. Try the rule of 3rds.
3) Lighting is flat/harsh. Try to get some more/less directional lighting. (OK, I'm cheating, there's 2 comments in here)
4) Subject is not quite in focus.
5) Try a closer crop.
and a few on PP issues...
6) Too much sharpening is showing halos.
7) Too much saturation.
8) Highlights are clipped. Watch your histogram!
9) Just way too over-edited and unrealistic looking.
10) Enough with those black 'cinema' borders already! (Yes, you know the ones I mean)
These rough categories would account for a decent percentage of my comments. I often try to add some encouragement as well, but for me, the critical comment is the most useful, provided it is taken in the right frame of mind.
A standard comment is less useful than one tailored to the image, but hey, school teachers have been using standard report card comments for years. I remember finding out the report cards were computerised, they had 98 possible comments to choose from, and #99 for a customised comment, which was seldom used.
Anyway, what's your top 5 comments? (or top 1, or 10, or 100)

honestly I hate getting the comment that says... "too snapshotish" or something similiar. So what? A snapshot is still a photo and sometimes those snapshots are real life the way it happens. So Does this comment mean they would rather see an obviously set up shot? Okay... getting down off the soapbox now. |

Probably:
noisy
wow...
needs neatimage
beautiful tones
nice job
yeah, I know very generic, although I try not to leave comments that sound the same and try to work with the individual photo. |

Hmm, yes, guilty as charged. I've certainly made this comment, although I normally try to say something more specific as well.
To elaborate, when I use it, it means, that the photo looks like a snapshot - something that was taken with little thought about photographic result, other than to press the shutter and capture the moment. Sometimes by chance, this can result in a great image, but the result is then not snapshotty.
A snapshot to me is something that may well have strong meaning to the person who took it, and maybe some others who know the subject well, and will forgive any number of photographic 'errors' just for the moment. However, a snapshot doesn't necessarily convey anything to an unbiased observer, but is simply a reminder to those who already know the subject or the moment. This is a great thing, but DPC challenges are not about sharing photos of our great holidays, or our beautiful kids. If it was, I would win every challenge, because my children are the most beautiful in the world. :)
On the other hand, what we like to see here at DPC is photos that show photographic excellence in subject, timing, lighting, colour, composition, and reach a wide range of audience who know nothing about the subject. All aspects of the photo, colour, composition, lighting, pose, choice of subject, have been chosen to work together to tell a visual story.
That's the hard thing about comments. You can't type this full explanation against every image, and all you see in the comment is "too snapshotty".

I got a comment in a recent challenge that simply said 'Boring'.
Not 'Boring because . .' 'or could be improved if . . '
Personally if I found a shot simply boring (and let's face it they are out there) I would either try and suggest an improvement or more likely simply step over it. But maybe that's just me : ) |

Don't have a top 5 or 10 but there is one comment that I always regret receiving:

these are the favorite comments I like to give:
1) Try composition instead of vignetting.
2) Why did this woman spend two hours putting on makeup just to stand in a lake?
3) Painterly.
4) Great abstract qualities.
5) You are the illegitimate child of Diane Arbus and Man Ray. I am starting a new religion just so I can worship you. |
