I just wanted to take a moment to plead and cajole people to leaving details on their photos. I am here to learn just as much as the next guy. I get very disappointed when I click on an intriguing photo only to find "N/A" in the comments section.
Fully 70% of the Top 10 photos either leave no details or speak minimally about the picture. So as to keep this thread positive I will simply give full props to MAK for leaving good details of his shot. I will also give kudos to Toyan and elsapo for describing their shot. Although he didn't come in the Top 10, I will also point out Larus as someone who leaves long comments about his pictures which are very satisfying.
Please leave details of your shots! What were you trying to accomplish? How did you come up with the idea? What special techniques did you use (if any)? How much processing? Hundred of people will become adoring fans if you do this with regularity. A few will consider you arrogant though... (ok, I couldn't resist that, just ignore it please)

I wholeheartedly agree with this. I have been slacking a bit lately with my descriptions, but I do try and fill them out especially when I think I have an interesting image. I too fell a tinge of dissapointment when I come across an image that I just need to know more about only to find those dreaded letters. |

Or just start a thread explaining... ;) (joking of course)
Ditto. It's very informative to read the photographer's comments. Should do more of it myself, in case anyone is interested. |

See my entry if you wanna know how I did it, Doc. :) I spent quite a bit of time writing it up.

I agree with the details on pics and would like to see more people do that. I often leave stories in my comments. I'd leave details such as what I was trying to capture, or special lighting setups or whatever, but unfortunately I just shoot what's there for the most part. And these days, there's not a lot of interesting "there" there to shoot. |

I think the last time I left any great details was on this pic back in April of 2006...

I say that perhaps Team Suck could be persuaded to adopt a Sneezy award for the most well detailed explanation of the techniques et al to augment the OOBie and YAPPIE awards.
Of course, Jason would be exempt from EVER receiving this award!

i stopped writing details few challenges after critique club stopped giving me comments, no other particular reason ... except i don't believe someone need explanation from "me" about some lousy photo :-)

I'd also like to mention scalvert and graphicfunk. I've learned loads from their descriptions. In fact, none of my double exposure shots would've happened without graphicfunk.
And you, Jason. :)

Since I had several nice comments post challenge (despite a credible but easily "lost in the morass" 37th place) I have added a few details in my shot.

Thanks for making this thread, as someone just starting into the world of photography comments are extremely helpful. There's nothing quite so dissatisfying as opening up a beautiful photo and finding an N/A. |

I think this is a great thread but honestly if somebody wants to know something about my picture they will PM me. Its happen many times. Leaving info on your picture is like giving out free work. But then again, isn't that DPC is all about? Just my thought. In the future my comment will still be a N/A. Send a PM if you want info :).

If you put the editing steps in when you enter, you won't have to try and remember them later if your photo receives a validation request. |

I'd like to add my thanks to people who leave good information in the photo details. I find it helps me understand how the shot has come about a lot more if I can read a little of the setup or see what processing has been done.
Sometimes it can cause a little excitement in the forums as DrAchoo has recently seen and I saw with my Free Study ribbon earlier this year. It's all good stuff though. |
