Am having some trouble deciding what to do with waterproof housing. My sister is a diving instructor and I have been taking advantage of that and now I kindof want to get into or at least try underwater photography. I do not really want to spend any serious money on this, at least till I figure out whether this is something I really want to get into or not so preferrably I don´t want to spend more than 2-300$ on this. I absolutely have no idea what I am getting into, photography wise, the diving part is no problem though. What kind of light would I be working with, to my eye it seems to get dark real soon when you go down a couple of meters so will I need flashes or will for example a 50mm 1.4 be enough?

ANY and all advice well appreciated :)

Here are a couple of houses and bags I found on BHphotovideo, most are way to expensive for my budget but I would still like some input if anyone has experience with these kind of houses and bags.

Aquapac AQUA450
Aquatica 20050
Ewa Marine UAXP100

As far as I know, youll be spending alot more than a couple hundred bucks for a reliable waterproof DSLR housing.

Flashes, on the other hand, can be protected quite cheaply...

My wife and I are going on a cruise in September. I bought the Canon A710 IS and the WP-DC6 underwater housing to go with it. The A710 has a white-balance setting for underwater, and the housing is rated to approx 40 meters. The housing comes with a flash diffuser so that you can still use the onboard flash. I spent a little over $300 US for the whole thing.

I know both Pentax and Olympus make waterproof P&S cameras. If you aren't very serious about underwater photography, this might be a better option.

Larus - I have a friend that has been doing underwater photography very well for quite some time. I will ask him and get some recommendations for you. As I recall, one thing I recall him telling me is that you need to have very good flashes that are synched for underwater.

That would be cool dude, if you have the time :)

I might just go for a p&s camera and a waterproof casing around that, are there any p&s cameras that take raw? I don´t care if it´s Canon or whatever, I was then thinking mostly along the lines of the Canon G7 but that doesn´t take raw pictures so I think I´ll skip that one.

I might just bother Henny and borrow her camera for this, although it´s pretty much auto so I can´t set the camera settings as I would want to, she has a Fuji F30.

Thought I´d bump this thread for the evening crowd, anybody know of an p&s camera or "SLR-like" camera like the Canon G7 that takes raw files?

The newer Panasonic FZ cameras take RAW files. And they have that sweet Leica lens. :)

Hi Larus I was in the same boat as you - Excuse the pun. I opted for the Ewa Marine.
Here are a couple of snaps with it...

Nothing special - Has to be said that it was pretty hard to get the camera with a flash inserted into the gear but it does hold both the camera and a flash on the hotshoe together which is a benefit. I also learnt to use a fixed focal lenth lens as a zoom tended to get pushed back into it's self every time I had framed a shot. The finger slot where you put your finger into to fire the shutter is a little fiddly but you get the hang of it. All in all for a cheap go at under water it's pretty fine. You get some silica gel to stop fogging which works - It's good fun and I have a few fun snaps that I wouldn't have normally had - I was learning scuba at the time so i was unable to take my camera down so I have no examples of what taking nature pics would be like - I can only say though for macro shots you might be pretty limited as the flash has to be on the hotshoe and might be too high up unless you are using a long macro?
Best of luck - All I can so though is for sure which ever one you get there is nothing more nreve racking than taking your $7000 worth of kit under the water for the first time!
Cheers
Jeff

You can also buy the olympus 770sw. its waterproof to 30' by itself, and even though there are no manual settings, i still like it.
