Well here comes the pain I guess esp after picking up my camera just 2 days back. I noticed this on the D day itself too. The f-- blinks and doesent allow shutter release. The AF modes dont work and changing battery or resetting the camera dont help either. Somehow that time it came back to its senses in a bit.

It happened again today but now I cant seem to fix it. One school of thought says its because the contacts between the lens and the camera are dirty. Any other thoughts?

At present the camera is with a friend of mine so she told me this was happening over the phone. I will ask her to clean the contacts and try again.

Should I be worried? Or is this normal?

BTW: Its a Nikon D80 with the std 18-135 snapped on.

Edit: I had suggested her to switch to M mode both on the lens and the camera and still it wouldnt let a shot off. I'm getting them goosies.

Nik beat me to it.

"normal" is when it just works for 3 years without a hitch.

I've also seen this when the lens isn't completely locked in place. Try taking the lens off and then putting it on again.

To do that, move the aperture ring to the smallest f-stop (like 22, or whatever it is). There will likely be a little switch at the base of the lens to lock it into that position.

Some lenses are easy to bump out of that locked position, and you'll get the error you're mentioning.

Must be a Nikon thing.

From the subject, I thought you were mad at your camera and cursing in your subject.
