I had a guy who was looking for more publicity shot/website shot pictures and this is some of the stuff we came up with

if you don't mind me asking, what is the lighting setup you have in the studio, and what lens are you using?

08/07/2007 11:01:06 AM · #87
For the inside shots I am using two alien been\s B400 lights with a silver umbrella and a white shoot through umbrelaa attatched to a nikon d70 with the kit lens. For the outside shots I have been using my sony a100 with a konika minolta 1.7 lens. :)

WOW, now THIS actually makes me want to think about getting lights..
this is stunningly beautiful!

I did these recently, (a paltry attempt next to that gorgeous shot of yours!), but this extreme black and white style sells very well for me:

Dang Claire ... with all of this great work you are turning out lately, I tried to add you into my "favorites" list, only to find that you're ALREADY in there! I'd add you again two or three more times if I could!

It's just amazing what you're turning out lately!

thanks!!! :)

i thought i might be helpful to post some of the key things ive learned from this headshot marathon so far:

-don't depend on photoshop: i used to just throw the lights up and then think oh i can fix that in photoshop....all that does is make me frustrated and takes more time once processing comes along...the more careful you are with the lights to begin with the better your shots will be

-in general when working in the studio doing straightforward portraits, don't go doing silly things like using a 1.7 depth of field. since you have more light go ahead and bump it to 7.1-8. It assures a clearer shot while still keeping wrinkles in the background inconspicuous

-when doing really close up portraits watch out for depth of fields that cause disembodied heads or just one eye in focus: I was trying to hard to use my new lens AT 1.7...but when i was really close up that didn't turn out as good of pictures because so many were just too out of focus. when i shoot really close up i stick to 2.5 or higher.

-don't just assume that your autofocus did the trick: i did a shoot or two where i just clicked away and never checked to make sure my autofocus was REALLY in focus. now when i shoot i check periodically by zooming in on the lcd screen to make sure that there is the best level of crispness in the eye before i continue. this has helped me ALOT because i can delete bad ones as i go along and i end up with more keepers so that the final decision comes down to which is the best face, not which one is the most in focus

i hope the things i have learned so far help someone out...they seem like they should be REALLY obvious but to me they weren't or else they would have never been problems, if i come up with any more tips i will put them up here

:-D

Sounds like you have a good start to a tutorial... finish your thoughts and post it. :-)

I posted a new picture in place of the one that was there before because he picked out a better shot of him outside...but it doesn't seem to have registered the change yet so bare with me...
