Yes I waited that long for a camera...any camera. I could have purchased a mid level much before but I wanted a dSLR. And I waited. Numerous times I had the money on the bank but then reasons kept popping up for not to buy it. Money came. Money went.
After a long, hard and ardous wait I am on my way to the store. To buy that Nikon D80. I recently got promoted and even though my salary is only 1/3 of what this camera costs I am going to take that plunge with all my savings. Financial planning be damned!
Wanted to tell you folks for it was here I realised that I should pursue my hobby more dilligently and passionately. If there is anything I know about photography is from this community.

Thanks folks... I shall be back in a couple of hours to show off.

yet you're still buying a Nikon...hummm maybe you should have paid a little more attention here. lol j/k Hey if I didn't say it some Canon guy would have.

So excited for you!! Congrats on taking the plunge. I have yet to do so..but I will! after this sting of post Photoshop purchase wears off. One thing at a time *smile*

You must be soooo excited, especially after the long wait. Have fun, can't wait to see your first photos.

I did finally get it and as is evident from my absence here I was hooked. Number of observations surfacing from my new acquisition.

I've taken about 200 shots and nothing to show. :-(
Its a good thing I refrained from commenting or voting on this site as its pretty clear that when it comes to getting things done I am nowehere close to you guys.

Yes I will post some of my 'work' as soon as I can get my hands on a software which can compress those jpgs to a smaller size. They're humongous!

I have soooo much to learn. Can't hardly wait to start bugging you guys. Here comes the newb :-)

It's not so much a matter of "compression" as it is resizing the images to a web size, typically 640 pixels on this site. Didn't your Nikon come with a CD with editing software on it? Practically every Canon does, as far as I know. It's basic stuff, but it will do for starters.

Welcome to the Nikon owner's club! Looking forward to seeing your photography...what you said about the camera and your salary, is that true? Salary is 1/3 of the price of the camera??? wow

Aye sir. It indeed was. Till I got this promotion. Now its somewhere near half.

Thanks R. I never thought of that. All I did was take out the camera and go click-happy. I am looking at the CD right now. Have some shots I would like to run by you folks. Will upload someplace and holler.

A point I noted.. perhaps I'm overlooking something but I could not find the 18-135 mm lens anywhere in the lens selection list. Maybe ....just maybe I need a whack to make me see it :-)

Hey thanks crayon... but what I meant was I could not find it on the Profile page of DPC where you can select what lens you have. I did get the 18-135 with my camera but cant list it on my profile :-)

So I am ready for the barrage of comments now. I will take one step at a time ... in a seperate post though.

Its there :-) Go to 'My Preferences', click on 'add a lens', choose 'Nikon', click on the model list, about half way down or so on the list. :-)

It is improperly classified or named as an AF rather than AF-S lens ... if you look for it among the other AF-S lenses you won't see it, look amongst the AF lenses.

Congrats on your new toy!

Umm. Do you mean your weekly salary, perhaps, as opposed to yearly? I usually read "salary" to mean annual, and I'm finding it hard to believe you earn $500/yr after your promotion. :)

Keep in mind where the OP lives. Salaries in India tend to be WAY lower than in the US.

I tend to agree with BAMartin with salaries being low here but not that low as to be earning $500/yr.Salary here is generally on a monthly basis. So my monthly salary is now about half of what the camera would cost.

Poor... but not that poor :-)
