I've been in touch with the local paper (//www.daily-times.com/) for the past month or so; I wanted to see if I could do an internship there because I want to get into photojournalism and that seemed like a great way to start. That's still up in the air, but I sent them some photos I shot of a motocross race last weekend which they used for their sports section on Tuesday, and yesterday the chief photographer called and asked if I could go shoot a swim practice this morning. Of course I said yes, showed up and did my best with the gear I have.

It was pretty dark in there - 1/200th at 1600 and 4.5 or so, and I was really hurting for a fast telephoto. Oh well, I think I got some decent stuff:

Skip has some spectacular shots from swim meets, and I can't even come close yet, but it was pretty fun.

The focus is a little off on my dive shot, which is a shame... I would have liked to have a faster lens not only for the shutter but to isolate the background too.

Just wanted to post, it's a milestone for me. I hope I did well enough for them to have me shoot other events, but if not I'll keep truckin' until I have the experience and the gear to deliver great stuff. The editor said they'll be running two shots (the first and third on here), probably in tomorrow's paper.

excellent, jon! keep on pluggin, and you'll get there. one nice thing about crappy equipment is that it forces you to really learn how to use it. the more you shoot, the more creative you get, the better prepared you'll be when you get your hands on the right gear. keep it up!!

Thanks.

Am I unpopular enough here, or are the shots bad enough not to get any other comments, even on things I could improve on next time? Including the captions I wrote, even though they won't ever run mine anyway?

Only comments that come to mind are about things you are already aware of. All three are underexposed, the nice action/dive shot has focus issues, etc. I don't see how practice can do anything about the first issue, but it could help the second.

Nontheless, if they are running the shots then it sounds like a success and that's what counts.

Thanks to everyone who made suggestions.. true, a flash would have probably helped a lot. The other side of the pool building didn't look very good, but at least there wouldn't have been a bright window.

Off camera flash would be tricky; don't have money for PW's and a sync cord might trip people. Maybe an on camera bounced would be enough.

flash is really tricky. from a pj standpoint, if you can't make it look like jeff's, then you'll probably wind up with stuff that looks like bad snapshots...that's what i meant about learning how to get the most out of your equipment as it is. if you keep pushing yourself, you'll find out how to get the shots you need and make them look great--without flash.
