I'm headed up towards Atlanta next week, stopping in Atlanta to see the Ga Aquarium and then up to Helen for the week at a lake house. My questions are:
1) Does the aquarium allow tripods? Anybody shot there and have recomendations?
2) What is around Helen to shoot? I'm with the family, so what things are there to do for kids 7-15?
Thanks. |

I went to the aquarium when it first opened and the one thing I can tell you is that it's dark. You'll need a higher ISO. I don't know if they allow tripods. Their website may give you an official ruling. And I don't know if a tripod would help much. The fish aren't gonna sit still for your longer exposures.
If you go to Helen, go to Anna Ruby Falls. Nice double waterfalls. There was a thread with some pics here recently.
Toccoa Falls is near Helen. 159' free-falling waterfall on the campus of Toccoa Falls College. No hiking necessary. I don't know how much rain they've had there, so it's hard to tell how impressive it would be. It gets sorta puny if it's been dry.

We've done the Aquarium and Helen as a family one year. The aquarium was packed even in the morning of a week day and I heard it's always packed so I doubt you'll be able to sucessfully use a tripod even if you try but I don't know the rules about that. Helen in itself is a photographers dream. It's soooo quaint you'll just want to pick it up and put it in your pocket. or move there permanantly(I gave that serious concideration). :P Anna ruby falls was a bit of a tough walk for the kids(3 and 5 at the time)but not too too bad. they lived. Have fun. post pics when you're back! |

Thanks. I had forgotten about the falls (I was there about 20 years ago). I will definitely make a trip out there.
If I end up with anything worthwhile, I will certainly post. |

I've shot at the aquarium a few times, never took a tripod so don't know if they allow them. But like others have said, probably wouldn't do you too much good anyways. I'd suggest a high ISO and a fast lens, that should work. It is VERY dark inside almost the whole place.
Usually the crowds are lesser later in the weekday, but with summer that may not be the case. Although, I think school starts there real soon.
We never made it up to Helen while we lived there, but I hear it's pretty cute. Sadly, you're just a little too early for Octoberfest though. :) |

Ditto what everybody else said about the aquarium. Don't bother with a tripod, mainly because you won't have room. Use a high ISO and fast lens and stick it directly onto the glass if you can. Don't forget the new World of Coke is now right next door. And the fountains at Centennial Park are a lot of fun; definitely bring the camera with you there (just don't forget to change the settings). |

If you don't mind some walking, Tallulah Gorge State Park (about 30-45 minutes away) offers some awesome views and a great river to cool off in at the bottom. There are several falls in the gorge, a great visitors center, and now a couple of different ways down to the floor. You need a permit to go to the floor, but those are free and available in the visitors center. There is a great 15 minute video there and a nice little theater that talks about the area. If the kids like water, sliding rock is a really cool, natural water slide. I imagine that they still allow swimming there. You really could spend an entire day there. I haven't used the boardwalks and stairs they have put in there, but have hiked the south rim trail several hundred times. Its about 15 minutes to the floor and about 50 out. Its pretty steep, but a very safe hike.
Also, I've always enjoyed Raven Cliff, and its just a little bit north of Helen.
I'll post some more later. Now, its time for dinner and BEER.
