i take all of my pics in 1600x1200. can i resize them (smaller) without losing image quality - or do I have to take them smaller ( i.e. 640x480, etc.)?

(and I don't have a copy of photoshop or anything like that...)

You really need some photo editing software. You can try PaintShopPro here:

Don't take them at 640x480. There are free programs available on the internet (such as The Gimp) which you can edit photos with for free, including resize, sharpen, colour balance, etc.

Second Paul's opinion. You don't need expensive software, but good inexpensive softare will make your digital life better.
You should shoot in higer resolution and resize later in software. There are plaenty of folks here willing to help with questions about "how to", and you can gain a TON of information by scouring past forum threads.

thanks everyone. I have the canon zoom browser and arcsoft photoimpressions that came w/ the camera - i guess that i haven't seen any documentation saying anything about resizing in them, does anyone else use these?

Of course I don't know how much extra money you have lying around but if you can spend 70 or 80 bucks I would recommend that you buy PhotoShop Elements. It does everything I̢۪ve ever needed and since it is the baby version of PhotoShop everything you learn using it will be helpful in the future if you ever are fortunate enough to get the full-blown version. PhotoShop is more or less the standard so lots of people can help you if you have questions, most of the tutorials on this site were written for PS.

Before you spend any money I would check out the ArcSoft program that came with your camera. There must be a menu item that allows you to resize your image. That process is in any basic software. You should be able to find something under the help menu to tell you how to do it.

thanks cp, but no dice. i'll have to give elements a try. I know that i'll prob. make a few of you cringe, but since i couldn't find a way to resize, i had been going into paint to do it that way still saving it as a jpeg.
