I thought this might be a useful thread for us falls photo lovers.
Thread Rules/Guidelines:
1) For each post, post only one falls location!
2) You can post multiple shots of the same falls in the post
3) Post the name and enough location info to find it on mapquest or GPS
4) Rate it 1-10, 10 being best!
...a) Accessibility (how easy is it to get to)
...b) As a Photo Subject
I know that's a lot, but think how useful this thread will be!
Please try not to post/comment in the thread, let's try to keep it concise! If there's something else you think should be added to the "rules", PM me, and I'll modify.

Kaaterskill Falls
260 Foot two-tiered falls located in the Catskills, NY. This is the highest two-tiered waterfall in New York State. About an hour south of Albany, NY. NYS route 23A, near Palenville and Haines Falls. (Click on Kaaterskill, above, for a good web info page).
Accessibility: 8 (short trail to reach)
Photo Subject: 10
Leading up to Kaaterskill is another beautiful falls, Bastion Falls. (But I'll post separately about that later). Kaaterskill and Bastion together are my favorite falls in NY (so far) other than Niagra!

Akaka Falls
Big Island, Hawai'i
450 foot drop
The waterfall is located 14 miles (23 km) north of Hilo (on the Big Island of Hawaii) in a canyon 4 miles (6.5 km) inland from the village of Honomu on the Hamakua coast.
The hike is really easy - paved path the whole way (with several sets of stairs, making it problematic for the handicapped). There are several other falls in the same park, but this is the most dramatic. Go early in the morning to get the best light and also to avoid overcast skies.
Rating:
Access -9 easy to find and short hike
Subject - 7 - limited access for alternative views of falls and no access up close for good perspective shots
Also, it is pretty close to the best Malasadas on the Big Island (at Tex's) Tex's

Papalaua Falls, Moloka'i, Hawai'i
Among the tallest waterfalls in all of Hawai'i
Total Height: 1644 feet (501 meters)
Tallest Single Drop: 1115 feet (340 meters)
Accessable by helicopter...
Rating - 10 for views
Difficult access
Although incredibly expensive, this is one of the most amazing things I have ever done. We took off from Mau'i and went and saw the sea cliffs of Moloka'i and flew into remote locations on Moloka'i that are really only accessable by helicopter.

Bridalveil Fall
Yosemite National Park
Accessibility: 10. Easily visible from many roadside vantage points, or a short hike on mostly paved trail takes you to foot of the falls.
Photo subject: 10. Because of the many vantage points, photographers can choose from a variety of compositions.
620 feet tall. Seasonal falls... beautiful in springtime when the afternoon wind blows the falling water accross the rocks (giving it it's name) and carries the mist back up the falls, but dries up sometimes to almost nothing in late summer or early spring.

Hickory Nut Falls
Chimney Rock Park, North Carolina
Total Height: 404 feet tall
Film Site of the 1992 Last of the Mohicans
Accessibility:
8 - if you take the Hickory Nut Falls Trail that will take you at the bottom of the waterfall. Moderate Hike 1.5 Miles Round Trip 45 minutes to 1 hour Round Trip.
6 - if you take the Skyline-Cliff Trail Loop that takes you to the top of the falls. Moderate to Strenuous Hike (Narrow passage at Wildcat Trap on the Cliff Trail). This Trail is not for those who have a fear of heights (like me). Hike is 1.5 Miles and will take about 1.5 to 2 hours Round Trip.
Photo subject: 10
Many different vantage points to take photos of both below and above at the waterfall. One can get quite a few interesting angles and closeups at the bottom of the Falls not to mention experience the majestic beauty of the bottom of the falls close-up. If you do not have a fear of heights, at the top of the Falls there are the vantage points at the top of the Falls, Nature's Showerbath and at Inspiration Point to take some fabulous shots (not to mention all these scenic locations were used in the Last of the Mohicans).
*Note there are other photo opportunities as that you can climb up to the Chimney Rock and take in the spectacular view of Hickory Nut Gorge & Lake Lure. There is also Devil's Head and Exclaimation Point for some other spectacular views. |

State: New York
Location: Robert H. Treman State Park, 6 miles south west of Ithaca.
Height: 115
Crest: 20?
Water Source: Enfield Creek
Summary: One of the more impressive falls in the Finger Lakes Region. This one definitely should be part of any waterfall tour of the area.

Turner Falls
Oklahoma - Located at about the 51 mile marker on I-35. Just a short drive west on Hwy 77 to this viewpoint. It's a State Park and for a small fee you can go in and get closer photos and mill about the streams that run out from this. During the heat of the day there are people up on the top doing slides into the shallow ponds.
For this shot I had to clone out 3 bouys at the bottom of the falls and there were a couple of people around some of the rocks on the left.

Glymur
this highest waterfall of iceland is located around 70km northeast of reykjavik in hvalfjördur, not on the main road (#1), you have to drive a long way around a fjord and then drive a gravel road to a small "parking", from where you can start the hike, which takes around 2 to 3 hours to reach the end of the canyon, where the waterfall falls down 198 meters into the canyon. the hike is pretty dangerous and difficult to find, so i'd give an accesibility score of 3, the view during the hike is awesome you walk along the edge of the canyon and can see the waterfall from many different perspectives on that way. only a few people managed to get to the end of the canyon by walking along the river DOWN in the canyon, and a few even died by stones falling down or drowned in the river.
the point from where the photo was taken, is already around 100 meters above the level of the river, i think the relations in the photo are really deceiving, everything looks much smaller than it actually was |

located on the south coast of iceland this beautiful waterfall is really easy to reach, you can see the falls from the main ring road #1.
due to the popularity as a photo subject i'd give it a score of 7, accesibility of 10.
ETA: be free to take a look into my waterfall collection with waterfall shots i took during my stays in iceland between 05 and 07
