Hey all is anyone familiar to what the law is on taking ppl pictures without asking? I thought it was fine, my publisher/editor says its fine, but my dad says he looked at it years ago and said I have to be careful. anyone have any ideas? do I always need to carry release forms? anybody have any ideas? oh Im in Canada, so I guess thats kinda important to know but anything helps! lol

You can usually take pictures of anything you can see, but publishing them is another matter.
What are you going to use the images for?
Usage will determine your rights. |

You can take any pictures in a public place as long as there is not assumption of privacy. You're assumed to have privacy in a bathroom, so you shouldn't take pictures there.
On the other hand, taking pictures of big drug dealers on a loan steet late at night isn't against the law, but might get you shot.
You can also read about your rights and print out a copy to carry around with you when you get hassled by some baco security guard who has an axe to grind. |

Canadian rights are pretty much the same as US, EXCEPT for Quebec.
In Canada that part of the law is covered by the provinces, and Quebec works under the basis of French civil code, as opposed to the common law used by the rest of the provinces.
That's why you won't see a "photographer's bill of rights" for Canada in general.
