I need some help making my mind up. I have a D50 and I am very happy with it. Trouble is I went to my local camera shop on Saturday and they have a D100 that I can part ex the D50 on.
What should I do now? I'm not that au faix with either of the camera specs and having had a quick search on the net I see that there isn't much to choose between them. The D100 does come with the extended battery pack and portrait shutter release but is that enough to swing it?
Somebody help me here - what should I do?

I have had both cameras at some point and can say that the D50 is a great tool but the D100 although older is a beter camera for me, better colours and the front dail for aperture really helps and if you get the grip the side function buttons help loads but thats just my opinion.. test the D100 out in burst mode.. mine had a buffer problem when i tried to fire off a burst of shots it used to lock up.. if it's a good D100 then I would suggest you grab it with open arms..

Thanks for this insight. Do you think that the colour was better on just your D100 or is it a general comment?
I realise that the D100 is an older model but I thought it to be a step up from the D50. Am I mistaken? |

For my personal taste the D100 had a better colour even though the technology is older. I also liked the D100 better because of the battery grip that had the side trigger, when shooting portrait this is a MUST in my personal opinion. Also the front dail is a must for me too as I do a lot of manual shooting mode.
Nothing wrong with a D50 though I had one, gave it to the wife now we sold it as she now has a D70s and I have the fuji and a D200 so kind of no need to have it around anymore, the new owner is totally pleased with it.
Finally - In my personal opinion I see the D100 as an UPGRADE to the D50.

Mak
Thanks for the reply - I agree with you - on the whole I think the D100 is an upgrade. It just seems to have a more 'solid' feel to it.
The soul searching goes on :) |

if you're very happy with it, why the urge to change? |

I'm happy with the D50 - this is ture but the opportunity has presented itself and I am tempted. This is mainly due to the extra battery pack and portrait shutter release that comes with the D100. Also as I mentioned the feel just seems better.
This photography bug is a classic case of grass always being greener. I have returned to the fold after a considerable absence and the desire to buy everything is strong. Mainly because now I can afford it and previously it was a pipe dream. |

i suggest you up your budget a bit more and go directly for the D200 instead of the outdated D100. i have a feeling you'd want the D200 after a few months with the D100! |

Yes totally agree with this, the D200 is awsome for all-round photography and is WAY WAY better than a D100.
If you are shooting portraiture mainly then try looking at the Fujifilm S5 Pro too. It is great for skin tones and dealing with contrast but not much good with general photography, it is mostly a studio/wedding style camera.
D200 with a grip and extra battery if money is no problem.

Let's muddy the water :- )
What's wrong with the D80 ? a technically better camera than the D50, newer than the D100 and cheaper than the D200 ?

I don't know the D100 except that this camera is over 5 years old... it came out in 2002.
In Digital photography, this is VERY old. |

Ok guys this is starting to sound expensive!
The D80 sounds interesting what am I looking at in terms of a good second hand price.
Don't worry I can convert funny money into good old pounds!
edit : wish I could spell or at very least type:)

D100 is a better camera than the D50. The D100 was released as more of an "almost pro" camera, whereas the D50 is just an decent dslr.
I do not think I would give up a D50 that I know everything about, and that it works well and has been well cared for, to get a D100 which may have had a zillion shots taken on it etc.
So even though I think the D100 is a better camera, there is not enough of a difference in quality that would make me give up a D50 that I had since new and know there is no problems with, in case the D100 is a lemon.
my 2 cents. |

Thanks for your insight and worth more than two cents.
I have had a week now to chill my beans and think about it and I guess I am going to pass on the D100. It is an older camera and it may be a lemon but my main concern is that it isn't an improvement over the D50.
As suggested probably my best course of action is to start saving for a D200 or D300 as it will be before I can afford it :)
Thank you all for your help and advice.

The problem with this body parts auction is at some stage you will need to lose something vital - like an eye or a shutter finger and then where would you be? |
