So, there you are, female, proud, and the skills to work an image on your camera.
Not every woman has the eye, not every woman is comfortable with their camera, but, some truly do have skills.
There is a competition for those that care.
There is a convention for those that want more than a competition.
Check out the site at least for the images, if not for the sorority.

If I had to live my life all over again, I WISH I'd set my sights on becoming a photojournalist - SIGH!
These are STUNNINGLY evocative images, I was VERY moved...thanks for pointing me in their direction Mr Horse.

"The life you could of led...the life you lead."
With the right motivation, and the pursuit of a dream, anything is possible.

Thanks Mr.Horse & Mr.Router - SMILE!
Yes it's very much a case of the 'The life you could have led...the life you lead' - GRIN!
I watched an awesome documentary some time ago on Women Photojournalists that cover wars and conflicts around the world - I was rivited to their stories and SO wished I could split myself in two and LIVE the life they were leading too (greedy thoughts - SMILE~!)
The one thing they all said was that Photojournalists in their capacity could rarely if ever have serious committed long term relationships and children - that in their minds it was one or the other.
Great television.

about half way through my bfa, i was seriously considering going into photojournalism. i was good at photography, fast and accurate, great with people, and not shy of getting the shot. then a few things happened. i read about dilip metha's experiences in bhopal, where he shot some of the most harrowing images around. he recounted how the experience was deeply dehumanizing, as he saw the death and tragedy all around, and had to keep shooting - that was his job. there is a stunningly moving image of baby girl, eyes open and clouded, half buried. he said he shot that without looking, he was crying so much.
another, much less earth shattering, incident happened in my painting studio. in another room, a friend stepped on a large nail, which went right through her foot. (we were taking a summer course, in an old stone building - it was very hot and we wore as little as legally possible) another friend and i ran to help, but she grabbed her camera, and started snapping as soon as we were in the room.
these gave me serious pause. i knew i could do photojournalism, but did i want to be the person i would have to be to do it well? it came down to 'no'. there are often days when i regret it, deeply, but i truly think i would have not liked myself very much, despite the images i would have created.

If I had the money, I would gladly help out.
Maybe a few of us members can start a pool or something.
Any takers to help some poor student?
