Would either of these two shots have faired better in the rhythms challenge that the one I entered? It was slammed due to labels out of focus...but the part that was in focus...their eyes weren't drawn to, so the shot suffered. Would either of these had done better?? This is one of my major struggles...cropping.
or
This was my lame submission. Both of the above are from the exact same photo, just cropped and rotated in one instance.
Thanks to anyone willing to help out. Edited for spelling.

Negative, the blurry text is still visible in the new crops. Until there is a Blurry Challenge, it is dpc-wrist-slashing to submit blurry shots.

There is no way to crop out the label without losing the shapes. Didn't want the label in focus, but guess it doesn't matter. Not trying to commit DPC suicide, lol! And there IS focus on the bottles (just not the da*& labels!)

Feh. I voted your entry a 7 - my eyes went right to the necks. I didn't even see the labels.
If you're happy, ignore the voters.

Only if you polished off all four bottles before shooting.
:-))
Like levyj413, I went to the shapes, shadows and lighting and never looked a the printing. Also like him, I thought it was a nice 7. I suppose it *would* have been *better* to clean off the labels.
Maybe. |

The trouble is that when there's writing we automatically want to read it. If it's extremely blurred our eyes seem to accept that easily enough and move on, but when it's just a bit blurred we seem to fixate on it, trying to make it clear.
Looking again, it also seems to be motion blur rather than focus, which I think is the more distracting of the two.
(just my opinions based on limited knowledge and experience...) |

What was your shutter speed on that shot? |

That explains the 'out-of-focus' areas. It's not actually oof, it's camera shake. If the shutter speed is less than 1/60s then it's unlikely you're going to be able to hold the camera steady. Put it on a tripod or a pile of books or something, and then use the timer to release the shutter. |

Thanks gang for the help. Guess even the crops (to hide the labels) didn't help. :P I love learning with you guys!!! |

I agree that it looked more like camera shake than being oof. If it were truly oof, I would not have minded so much. But the camera shake detracted from this image. But I really liked the idea and the subject. |
