Any suggetions on using my sb600 at a fashion show, I usually point my flash to the ceiling, but its a ballroom that the show is held in so I dont know where to bounce it. Pointing directly on gives harsh light, right? |

Yup, diffuser or pocket bounce. The best bet would probably be a small softbox.

If its that one, according to a conversation with leroy and a couple other people you might not want to use it at all ever again. |

Imw aiting for leroy to come back on this whats the lazy ... ....... doing lol. It's more like shooting through the side of a trash can then really a light diffuser. It also traps heat and flashes fry enough on their own much less with some help.
But talk to leroy about it. |

That thing will fry your poor flash if you shoot a lot.

The Lightsphere by Gary Fong work's pretty well.
There's something called the A Better Bounce Card/Featherlight, but you can make the same with a piece of white felt and a big rubber band.
Or you could make a Ringlight, a Softbox if you're the DIY type.

How did the shell thing work out Leroy?
Also, I saw this Rotating Camera bracket on Strobist that is about half the price of any competing camera rotating bracket.
The point of camera rotation instead of the flash bracket is to keep the light coming from the same angle and above at all times.
They have a Kit that includes their pop-out softbox for $122. If you check out other options, that pretty stinking cheap. A non-rotating combo can be found cheaper, yes.
Edit - oh, the lil' softbox can also be used on a standard lightstand. They also sell sync cords.

Like I said, I don't give a crap what the gear looks like. It's the photos I'm worried about. Spend some time shooting indoors in low light with high cielings, and you'll want to look like a radio station too. |

I'd pimp that thing :-) At $122 it's not a bad deal either.

Keep in mind he's not an official photographer, so they're not going to put up with him having a huge diffuser/softbox setup on his camera and blocking the view of people behind him. I have the Stofen "cap" and have used it for thousands of snaps with no problem, and I think it gives better light than the clear LightSphere that I have (in fact, the Stofen is back on my camera and the LS has sat in a closet since a month after I bought it). The LS Cloud might be a different story...
So, the real answer here depends on how far you need to throw the light. If you can actually get up front and you plan to shoot the models as they pass you on the stage, that's one thing. If you might end up in back or want to shoot the models when they're still 30 feet down the runway, that's another thing.
If you're going to go with the LightSphere, get the cloud model and the Chrome Dome for an event like this. The WhaleTail might be good too, but I have no direct experience with it. If you're not ready to spend $80 for another diffuser right now, I think you'll be okay with the Stofen. |

We werent suggesting him to use that. That was a hijack at the most.
We were suggesting a small difuser thats probly 2 inches bigger then the flash. And Stofen makes 100 different products. They do have a bounce forward cap. That bounces the flash off a peice of plastic and back forward. |

Another thing you might consider is to use a longish pc cord and just hold the flash high and to the left.
Even if it's hard light, high and to the side can produce great results. You don't want to be too far from the subject though because you want a fairly big angle between the flash and the subject. The further you are the more acute the angle gets approaching a look as if it were just shot on camera.
